Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now!

This week we're loving Equal Exchange Coffee! Why?

1. Equal Exchange is one of the founders of the fair trade movement.

2. Equal Exchange is a worker-owned co-op that values both farmers and consumers.

3. It's on SALE! Only $9.99/lb. reg.$11.49/lb. for some of the best beans money can buy. WOW!!!

"How can I describe it? Good food is like music you can taste, color you can smell"

– Chef Auguste Gusteau (from the movie Ratatouille)

This week, we're featuring two colorful and delicious local produce items: Bagged Spinach from Oak Hill Farms in Poteet and organic one pound bagged carrots from Johnson's Backyard Garden in Austin.  Both are great raw or cooked.

The spinach has a really "meaty," substantial texture to it that makes it great for salads and the flavor is great, too. We think you'll agree that $3.99 for a 10 oz bag is a pretty good deal.

The carrots from JBG are a favorite for good reason: they're sweet, juicy, and crunchy.  Word is Dan's daughter Jojo won't let him in the house unless he's carrying a bag of them!  Give them a shot yourself, but be warned! They may be habit forming!

- Adam King, Produce Manager

Hot & Toasty

The Deli's Getting Hot with a New Menu of Toasty Sandwiches!

We are super excited about our brand new hot sandwich oven behind the Deli Counter! To celebrate its arrival, we are offering a menu of six hot and toasty sandwiches for you! Try our classic BLT on toasted local sourdough, or our cheesy Caprese with melted mozzarella, house-made pesto, fresh veggies and oil and vinegar! The Italian will fill you up, piled high with two kinds of salami and honey maple ham on local toasted ciabatta. Our Smoked Ham & Swiss comes with stone ground mustard, lettuce and tomatoes on local rye bread. Try my favorite, the Tuna Melt, which melts sharp white cheddar over our house-made tuna salad. Or have a WV Turkey Club, featuring oven-roasted turkey, crispy bacon and ripe avocado with veggies on organic wheat bread. Come on in to read the menu for all the details! We'll be working on even more hot sandwich selections to come, but for now, just head on over and try one!

Local Meat & Poultry

Wheatsville is now stocking Maple Leaf Farms White Peking Ducks. They are antibiotic free and certified humanely raised by their Trident Stewardship Program.  Find recipes and learn more about Maple Leaf Farms beliefs and farming practices on their website.

We can offer boneless breasts and leg quarters as well as the whole bird. Remember, when roasting a duck it needs to be elevated in your pan or pot. Ducks have a lot of fat, and it renders while roasting. Duck fat is also very delicious. I recommend using every drop of your rendered duck fat. One way to use it, and this is pretty decadent, is to make risotto while roasting and use the duck fat for your risotto liquid. French fries fried in duck fat are also amazing.

Don't forget to stock up on some freezer items for Owner Appreciation Days. Take a chance on trying out that Windy Hill Farms Goat Stew meat you've been waiting to try.  By all means pick up some of the Brangus Grass Fed and Grass Finished Ground Beef or Stew. This beef is incredible. Not only does it taste great, but it is being raised responsibly for the greatest health benefits to those that eat it and raise it. These are limited supplies so stock up.

The Applegate Farms Great Organic Hot Dog has moved to the freezer for a much better price of $6.99.

Keep an eye out for the Dewberry Hills Chicken. We love Jane and Terry and what they are doing to raise a great local chicken. We have recently started selling fresh livers and hearts and chicken feet. Dewberry Hills is a smaller farm than Buddy's and these parts are somewhat limited. If you want us to put some aside for you, feel free to call, otherwise, they come in on Wednesdays and are usually gone by the weekend.

Kidding Season

This time of the year is kidding season for most goat dairies.  Cheese production wanes because the majority of the milk goes to feeding the kids. Also if the does are not allowed to breed there will be no milk production later in the year. The cheese produced with this milk is creamier and richer because of the increased butter fat. So expect to see decreased levels in our stock of Wateroak and Pure Luck goat cheeses.  We are lucky enough to have received a small order of Pure Luck Dairy's cheeses. We have chevre, Hopelessly Bleu and a bit of June's Joy. Get it while you can.

Remember, it is Owner Appreciation Days at Wheatsville. Owners save 10% off any one shopping trip through January 22nd.

Plant a Seed

It's Not Too Early to Start That Spring Garden in Central Texas!

Wheatsville's Got Your Heirloom and Organic Seeds for $2.29 a pack!

Many flowers actually benefit from one last freeze – sweet peas, for example! Sweet peas are a beautiful decorative addition to any garden, but unlike other peas, they are purely ornamental and poisonous if eaten. Other wildflowers share this characteristic, that they actually require a freeze for proper germination!

Other plants, like tomatoes and peppers, can be started indoors as early as February to ensure that by March, they are big and hardy enough to be transplanted directly into the ground.

Stop by Wheatsville's Seed Savers Exchange rack for all of your favorite seeds – all IN SEASON! Also, check out our new Austin area planting guide, with monthly tips on preparing your soil, as well as a simple guide to which seeds are best to plant each month right here in Austin!

Wine Buyer's Pick Pack

The Owner Appreciation Days Wine Buyer Pick Pack combines some of our favorite wines together in one of our Wheatsville 6 bottle bags for an incredible deal. Combine the deal on the wine itself with the 10% off for buying six bottles at one time AND your 10% one time Owner Appreciation Days discount and that amounts to a whopping savings of $17.40. Plus the bag is free!

Featuring, Kenwood Vintage Red, Magnate Red, Parducci Pinot Noir, Blackberet Red, Casal Garcia Vinho Verde, and Lagaria Pinot Grigio!

Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPA is here! Sierra Nevada's new seasonal beer, Ruthless Rye IPA, is a delicious brew featuring the flavors of rye bread, Citrus, and pine. Think Sierra Nevada Torpedo with the addition of rye. Awesome!

Wheatsville is proudly sponsoring the HONK!TX festival again this year from March 23-25. If you didn't catch them last year HONK!TX an amazing (and totally free) grassroots musical event that features over 20 street marching bands from around the country playing and marching in parks & neighborhoods around town.

This year they are holding a fundraiser at Spiderhouse's 29th Street Ballroom on Friday, January 20th with Minor Mishap Marching Band and the Dead Music Capital Band for a night of brass, BOOM, and all around marching madness!  All proceeds go towards funding the HONK!TX 2012 Festival. Please go and support this noisy group of honkers!

The spotlight is on food co-ops for the world premiere of Co+op, stronger together's video series celebrating 2012 International Year of Cooperatives and hosted by celebrity chef Kevin Gillespie.

Join us virtually on Saturday, January 21st as we watch the on-line premiere of Lights, Camera, Co+op's at 7pm.

In this series, Kevin travels to food co-ops across the country—from grocery aisles to farm fields—to share their passion for delicious food and their local communities. Watch and you'll quickly discover the many ways food co-ops, their shoppers and owners, and their communities are stronger together.

People's Community Clinic

We're also very happy to be sponsoring People's Community Clinic with our Community Action Wednesday Program and Children's Book Drive. We will donate 1% of total store sales to PCC every Wednesday in January and we are also accepting gently used English & Spanish children's books to be used in their waiting room. Donations can be dropped off in the bins at the front of our store until January 31st.

I hope you have a most excellent week!
