Strawberries, Springtime, recipes and allergy relief!

Hi Wheatsville friends and fans!

Hope you are having an excellent weekend!

WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now! And for the second week in a row, we found the One Big Thing in the produce department. Once you try POTEET STRAWBERRIES, you'll understand why!

What do we like about POTEET STRAWBERRIES?

1)         Locally grown at family owned and operated Oak Hill Farms in Poteet, Texas.

2)         And speaking of Poteet, it's the strawberry capital of the Lone Star State!

3)         Not sprayed with pesticides—grown with organic fertilizer.

If you want to learn more about the story behind POTEET STRAWBERRIES, check out the Oak Hill Farm profile on Farm-to-Table: http://www.farmtotabletx.com/2010/09/oak-hill-farms/.

Passover Items at Wheatsville!

For the first time ever, we are happy to be able to offer Passover items at the co-op. Look for the display near register 6 featuring classic favorites such as Manischewitz Matzo Crackers, Gefilte Fish and Matzo Meal as well as comfort foods like Wide Egg Noodles, Pasta Sauce and Stuffing Mix. We are also excited to offer Yehuda Gluten Free Matzo Crackers! All items are Kosher for Passover. We were only able to get limited quantities and unfortunately some of the items featured in the Wheatsville Breeze Newspaper ended up being unavailable, so if you see a must-have in the store, grab it while you can! Let us know if you would like to see one of your favorites next year and we hope you have a good Passover season!

Kosher wines for Passover!

Recanati Cabernet Sauvignon and Recanati Chardonnay are not only Kosher for Passover, they are also delicious! About the Cabernet, Wine Enthusiast says,"The heady and intense bouquet is loaded with black plum, berry and cassis fruit aromas along with melted dark chocolate. Medium weight with dusty tannins and flavors of cherry skin and sweet spice that linger through the finish. Drink now. 88 Points!" A rating like that calls for a L'Chaim!

Celebrate Earth Day with the Bulk Department!

With Earth Day coming up later this month I'd like to remind you all of the Earth-friendly virtues of shopping in bulk!  There are many ways that shopping in bulk is environmentally conscious, the most obvious of which is reduced packaging.  If you're concerned with the amount of packaging you are using, as many folks are, a great way to combat this is by re-using your own containers from home.  From cereal to pasta to peanut butter to coffee, you can greatly cut down on waste by re-using your own containers over and over again!  (You also get a 5¢ discount for every container you use)  So the next time you're shopping with the planet in mind, be sure to stop by the Bulk department!

Cheese Island

We just did a re-organization of Cheese Island; our intention was to make it easier to shop. We wanted to group like cheeses with like cheeses, so we put cheddars with cheddars and the Gouda with Gouda and so on. There was an exception as all the local cheeses will be in a group. If you don't see something you're looking for, just ask a staff person, the deli counter folks will be happy to help you, too!

We have a new product on our shelves and it's local. We are now carrying Wateroak Farms' Skim Milk Goat Feta it is $8.99 for an 8 oz. tub.

We have a Four Cheese Ravioli from Pasta and Company. It is delicious. Bring some home for dinner.

We have our in-house packaged Fetas on sale. The Domestic Cow's Milk Feta is on sale for $4.99/lb, regularly $6.29/lb. Romainian Sheep's Milk Feta is on sale for $5.99/lb, regularly $7.99/lb. And Bulgarian Sheeps Milk Feta is on sale for $6.29/lb, regularly $7.29/lb

Also, we have our Port Salut on sale for $13.99/lb, regularly $17.99/lb.

Sierra Nevada Summerfest  is here!  Summerfest is a refreshing, pilsner-style lager. Its incredible smoothness comes from an extra-long lagering period. Lighter in body than other Sierra Nevada  ales but just as complex in character, Summerfest  quenches your thirst with big aroma and a tangy hop bite.

Trout recipe

INGREDIENTS:

4 boned whole fresh trout (about 10 ounces each)
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
8 thin orange slices
8 thin lemon slices
8 thin lime slices
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro or parsley, plus sprigs for garnish

PREPARATION:

Prepare a medium fire in a covered charcoal or gas grill. Oil the grill rack.

Brush the trout inside and out with the olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

Laying the trout open, overlap 1 each of the orange, lemon, and lime slices along one side. Sprinkle each with 1 tablespoon of the chopped cilantro, then fold the trout over to enclose the filling. Secure the opening with small skewers or wooden toothpicks. Grill the trout for 5 minutes. Use a wide spatula to turn it carefully. Grill 4 to 5 minutes longer, until just cooked through.

Serve garnished with the remaining citrus slices and cilantro sprigs.

Ingredients:

4 whole trout, cleaned
8 strips of bacon
1 lemon
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 med. onion, sliced

Slice lemon in half and slice half the lemon into slim wedges. Mix Maple syrup and brown sugar together and brush inside of trout with mixture. Stuff the trout with lemon and onion slices. Brush more maple syrup mixture on outside of fish. Lay out a large enough piece of aluminum foil to wrap the fish completely.

Lay a strip of bacon down and place fish on top of it, lay another strip of bacon over the top and wrap loosely in aluminum foil. Place on grill over medium low heat for 15-20 minutes until bacon is done and fish flakes. Squeeze other half of lemon over fish or garnish with wedges from other part of lemon.  You can also add other spices/seasonings to suit taste.
