We're making some noise!

Wheatsville Logo

Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Owner Appreciation Days are starting this Saturday, January 14th and will run through Sunday, January 22nd! Owners, this means you will save 10% OFF ONE ENTIRE SHOPPING TRIP!
We have doubled the amount of Owner Deals (items that are on sale for owners only) and have brought in deals on favorites like Dr.Bronner's, 10 Stage Water Filters and our very popular Wine Buyer's Pick Pack featuring 6 bottles of wine on sale!
This is a great time to stock up on pantry staples too as our bulk department runs Daily Deals for Owners throughout the week! Each day will feature a new bulk item on sale.
And while we're really excited about Owner Appreciation Days, we're also very happy to be sponsoring People's Community Clinic with our Community Action Wednesday Program and Children's Book Drive. We will donate 1% of total store sales to PCC every Wednesday in January and we are also accepting gently used English & Spanish children's books to be used in their waiting room. Donations can be dropped off in the bins at the front of our store until January 31st.
Lastly Wheatsville is proudly sponsoring the HONK!TX festival again this year from March 23-25. If you didn't catch them last year HONK!TX an amazing (and totally free) grassroots musical event that features over 20 street marching bands from around the country playing and marching in  parks & neighborhoods around town.
This year they are holding a fundraiser at Spiderhouse's 29th Street Ballroom on Friday, January 20th with Minor Mishap Marching Band and the Dead Music Capital Band for a night of brass, BOOM, and all around marching madness!  All proceeds go towards funding the HONK!TX 2012 Festival. Please go and support this noisy group of honkers!

WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now!
This week's One Big Thing is Citrus Cups!
Why do we like them?
1. Freshly prepared, peeled and ready to eat in our produce department!
2. For only $2.49 it's a great breakfast, snack or dessert!
3. Sunshine in a cup! You know, if sunshine were cold and juicy.

Celebrate Citrus!

Celebrate Citrus! On Saturday and Sunday, we're hitting you with a citrus-sampling blitz!  It's citrus season and now is the best time to eat it.  You can buy an orange most any day of the year but they won't taste like they do right now.  Specialty items like blood oranges, Cara Cara navels, tangelos and tangerines are only available for a limited time.  We want you to find a new favorite or rediscover an old one.  We'll be sampling most every citrus item on our shelves so if there's something you've been thinking about trying, stop by and give it a shot!
Johnson's Backyard Garden in East Austin is growing strong and in addition to fabulous organic carrots, cauliflower, spinach, beets, kale, collards, parsley, cilantro, and radishes, Johnson's has produced some of the most incredible broccoli you have ever tasted.  The stems are so sweet and tender – don't toss them out!  The florettes are deep dark green and packed with goodness.  I come from New Mexico and the idea of locally grown organic broccoli just trips me out.  We are so fortunate to have a farm like JBG serving Austin!

Lightnin' Lemons

The most glamorous culinary ingredients of these winter months are undoubtedly citrus fruits, which are in peak season, absolutely gorgeous, and sweeter than ever right now. This is the time of year to add juicy orange sections to salads, eat a whole, sweet red grapefruit for breakfast, and give everything you eat an extra squeeze of fresh lemon, just because. Wheatsville is celebrating the many joys of citrus this weekend and the Deli is stepping up to bring you many of our dishes that star lemon, lime, and orange!
From our Bakery's Lightnin' Lemon Corncake, Orange Poppyseed Muffins and Citrus Glazed Scones to our Kitchen's Lemon Parmesan Tortellini, Curry Lime Chicken Salad and Lemon Scented Quinoa, we're on it!
We'll also have our fantastic, caffeine-free Gingerade, made with fresh ginger, spices and a blend of lemon, lime and orange juices – get it hot or iced! It's an allergy-destroyer and tummy-tenderizer all in one, and boy does it taste good too – stir in some local honey and cayenne for an extra immunity booster, and celebrate the wonders of citrus with us!

Local, Sustainable

We have some exciting new pork & bison sausages from  Pederson's, a local farm and longtime friend of Wheatsville. The Bierwurst is a german style sausage traditionally used as a sandwich sausage, while the Jalepeno lends some southern flare to the procedings.
We also have local, sustainable, humanely raised Boer Goat and Brangus Beef (both ground and stew meat) from Windy Hill Farms in Comanche, TX. Both are completely grass fed and great for all sorts of dishes. Goat in particular lends itself well to curries and Ty Wolosin shares his favorite Goat Curry recipe with us. It's the same popular recipe you'll find him sampling at all the farmer's markets around town. Keep in mind, the Brangus Beef is harvested one steer at a time, so supplies will be limited and spotty. Make sure you get it while you can, find it in our freezer section.
On Coop Deals we have Applegate Farms Homestyle Chicken Tenders in Reg. and Gluten Free.
Look out later in the Week for whole and parted all natural Peking Duck.

Master Cleanse

Come celebrate citrus and Owner Appreciation with great deals on the vitamins aisle!  When I think of citrus I think of the amazing cleansing properties inherent in citrus.  Think of all the citrus in natural cleaning products.  This is why the lemonade diet, or "Master Cleanse" is so effective.  If you are considering doing this tried-and-true cleanse, we have the original "Master Cleanser" book and the "Complete Master Cleanse" book on the vitamins aisle.  Cleansing is something many of you might be considering this time of year, as a way to jumpstart the new year.  To help you with your cleansing journey we have many cleansing kits on sale right now
Renew Life truly makes excellent products for cleansing.  There are one-week, two-week, and 30-day cleanses to choose from.  Also, you'll find cleansing kits for specific areas of concern:  liver, kidney, parasites, candida, kick-starting a diet, a whole-body cleanse, and a cleanse for first-timers.
Also, brand new(for us) and on sale are the cleansing kits from Garden of Life: The Perfect Cleanse, a 10-day cleanse, and the RAW Cleanse, a 7-day cleanse.  An effective cleanse leaves you feeling lighter and more energized, can greatly reduce allergies, improve digestion, clear-up the skin, improve body odor, and best of all, leave you feeling truly empowered.  And, we have some of the best products on the market to aid in an effective cleanse.

Windy Hill Farms Curried Goat

Windy Hill Farms Curried Goat
from Ty Wolosin

2 pounds goat meat
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 hot chili (of your choice, if you like it hot go with Serrano, or scotch bonnet if you can find one)
1 lime, juiced
1 small bunch thyme, coarsely chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoon curry powder

Combine goat, garlic, chili, lime juice, thyme, allspice, salt and
curry powder in a large dish. Toss together and marinate overnight.
- if using ground, not necessary to marinate.

vegetable oil for searing (I like coconut oil)
1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
3 cups chicken stock (veggie stock or beer works as well)
1/2 cup coconut milk
1 tomato, chopped
1/2 cup peas
1 cup chopped potato
Kosher salt and cracked black pepper
Cilantro, chopped (optional garnish)
Scallions, sliced (optional garnish)

Preheat oven to 325°F. Heat a large drizzle of vegetable oil in a braising dish over medium-high heat, remove goat from marinade (reserve marinade), and sear in batches until meat is brown on all sides. Reserve meat. Add onion and green pepper to braising dish and cook until beginning to brown, about 4 minutes. Add goat, reserved marinade, and chicken stock to the onion/pepper mixture and bring to a simmer. Cover with lid and place in preheated oven until goat is tender, about 3 hours. With ground it should only take 30 min.

When goat is tender, remove from the oven.  Add coconut milk tomato, peas, and cooked potato, and simmer over medium heat until potato is tender and liquid is thickened. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve over rice, garnished with cilantro and scallions with lots of cold beer. Keep in mind the Brangus is strictly while we can get it, there is limited supply right now so grab it while you can.

These two notoriously long-cooking grains are fully cooked and ready to eat—just warm and add to hot cereals, salads, stir fries, or any dish desired. All of Stahlbush’s grains are organically grown in the USA, are Non-GMO Project Verified, and are packaged in biodegradable bags.
Find them in our frozen department.

Munkebo Farm Quail Eggs

Quail eggs are tan with dark brown speckles, and offer a taste and nutritional profile similar to that of the chicken egg. The yolk of a quail egg is usually a darker orange than typical commercial chicken egg yolks, with a higher yolk-to-white ratio. One-third the size of a large chicken egg, their small size makes them a good food for children. Our quail eggs come from Munkebo Farm, a permaculture farm located in Manor, Texas.
10ct, Reg. $6.99

Building on Texas' long tradition of rice growing, the rice used in Texas Sake Company's saké is a variety grown from Japanese seed that arrived here more than 100 years ago. Their sakés are the first certified organic Saké Kura in North America, and the first organic alcohol made in Texas.
