Sustainable seafood and Dr. Pepper Ham for easter with recipe

Lent is drawing to a close but there is still time to get some great deals on sustainable seafood.

We, have Yellowfin Tuna on sale @ $8.99/lb. reg 10.99/lb., running through April 22.

Every Friday until Easter it's Fish Fridays.  We have Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon on sale @ $16.99/lb. reg $ 17.99/lb. For something a little more versatile in the kitchen, try some Arctic Cod on sale for $12.99/lb reg. $14.99/lb. While you're there, check out some of our other sustainable seafood, like Trollerpoint Coho Salmon Steaks and fillets, or Halibut. New to the fish case is whole Rainbow Trout @$9.99/lbs. This trout is farmed in Idaho and is sustainable. Over in the Wheatsville blog I have left a couple of whole trout recipes for the grill.

Those big spring time holidays are just around the corner and Wheatsville has plenty of options for your big meal center piece.

We have Niman Ranch Brisket @ $5.99/lb. We also have a Market Trimmed Brisket @ $8.99/lb if you are shopping for something a little smaller than a whole Brisket.

We also have plenty of Lamb options for you. We carry a variety of steaks but can also tie you up a roast if you're looking to feed a number of people. For a Shoulder or Leg Roast, a days notice would be really helpful. New to the store are bone-in Lamb Loin chops. A little t-bone of lamb that is great on the grill or in the oven. In the blog is a marinade that I use at home when I grill or roast lamb.

Coming very soon are a couple different sizes of Niman Ranch Boneless Hams. We will have Half cut and Quarter Cut Hams as well as the Petite Hams that we always carry. Over in the Wheatsville Blog I've left a recipe for Dr.Pepper Ham. It's a Texas twist on glazing that adds some sweet with a tangy bite to that classic Ham.

Ingredients
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup Dr Pepper
2 tablespoons orange juice
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard

Directions
1. Remove the ham from the packaging. Set the ham, cut-side down, in a 13 by 9-inch baking dish and wrap tightly with foil.) Let sit at room temperature for 1 1/2 hours.

2. Adjust an oven rack to the lowest position and heat the oven to 250°F (120°C).

3. Bake the ham until the center registers 100°F on an instant-read thermometer, 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours about 17 minutes per pound , depending on the weight of the ham.

4. While the ham bakes, bring the sugar, Dr Pepper, orange juice, and mustard to a simmer in a medium saucepan and cook until syrupy and reduced to 3/4 cup, about 8 minutes.

5. Remove the ham from the oven and roll back the sides of the bag to expose the ham. Brush the ham liberally with the Dr Pepper glaze and return to the oven until the glaze becomes sticky, about 10 minutes. Brush the entire ham again with the Dr Pepper glaze, tent loosely with foil, and rest for 30 to 40 minutes before serving.(end Blog)

On Coop Owner Deals we have Applegate Farms Slow Cooked Ham @$3.59 reg.$5.99.

WHEATSVILLE’S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff pick the product we’re most excited about right now! The weather’s heating up, and what better way to stave off the heat than with iced drinks? Starting now, you can choose your favorite Wheatsville-crafted iced drinks from THE BOX!

What do we like about THE BOX?

1) Located right in front of the deli— our very own pre-made iced coffee, iced gingerade and hibiscus mint iced tea!

2) Convenient for staff and customers alike…just grab and go, no wait for refreshment!

3) The concept of THE BOX originated from an official Wheatsville Staff Idea and came to fruition because several of our staff got together and made it happen. What’s not to like about a little cooperation?

Every day is Earth Day, but we're gonna do a li'l something special on 4/22, save the date!

We are big believers that Every Day is Earth Day, but we can also get into playing along with the “official” Earth Day date. This year, we’re especially focusing on a special sampling event here at the co-op on Friday 4/22. From 4-7, come on in for lots of special sampling of Earth Friendly items like things that are local, organic and sustainable. We’ll have more details in our next weekly update, so stay tuned!

Passover Items at Wheatsville!

We announced in last week’s email that for the first time ever, we are happy to be able to offer Passover items at the co-op. We were excited to offer Yehuda Gluten Free Matzo Crackers but due to popular demand, we are sold out! We will definitely try to get tons more for next year. We do still have a nice amount of Streit’s Matzo made with Organic Flour. Look for the Passover Foods display near register 6 also featuring classic favorites such as Manischewitz Matzo Crackers, Gefilte Fish and Matzo Meal as well as comfort foods like Wide Egg Noodles, Pasta Sauce, Stuffing Mix and Chocolate Covered Macaroons! All items are Kosher for Passover. We were only able to get limited quantities and unfortunately some of the items featured in the Wheatsville Breeze Newspaper ended up being unavailable, so if you see a must-have in the store, grab it while you can! Let us know if you would like to see one of your favorites next year and we hope you have a great Passover! This is the first year we’ve been able to go all out and try to really provide for Passover, so let us know how we’re doing and spread the word. We’re gauging demand for next year based on this year’s success…

Kosher wines for Passover!

Recanati Cabernet Sauvignon and Recanati Chardonnay are not only Kosher for Passover, they are also delicious! About the Cabernet, Wine Enthusiast says,”The heady and intense bouquet is loaded with black plum, berry and cassis fruit aromas along with melted dark chocolate. Medium weight with dusty tannins and flavors of cherry skin and sweet spice that linger through the finish. Drink now. 88 Points!” A rating like that calls for a L’Chaim!

Our friends at Skagit Valley Co-op have a nice post with some suggestions on a more natural and organic Seder- http://s.coop/14gi

Looking for a hip and cool haggadah? This blog post from last year has a nice description of some really cool ones!

Celebrate Earth Day with the Bulk Department!

With Earth Day coming up soon I’d like to remind you all of the Earth-friendly virtues of shopping in bulk! There are many ways in which our bulk department is environmentally conscious, and right now I’d like to say a bit about our dedication to Organic products. Buying Organic is one of the most significant ways for shoppers to show their concern for the environment, and the bulk department proudly carries a bunch of great Organic foods! Buying bulk foods such as organic beans, grains, and nuts is a very cost-effective way to include quality earth-friendly food in your diet, no matter what your budget is like. So the next time you’re shopping with the planet in mind, be sure to stop by the Bulk department!

Happy Easter!

It’s more than a week away, but if you celebrate Easter, be aware of the items we’ll have in store for you!

Sjaak’s Organic Fair Trade Chocolates- including vegan styles! Get ‘em while we have ‘em, because when we run out, they will be GONE! We have a few varieties that are even sold out on THEIR web-site! (Like their organic Limited Edition Bunny Truffle Gift Box- vegan 'milk' chocolate truffle assortment is in an adorable bunny box. The box is handmade in Thailand by a women's cooperative using tree free fibers. Enjoy!

We’ll also be carrying some special fresh Calla Lilies beginning on Good Friday for your easter table.

Look for next week’s e-mail when we give you the lowdown on natural egg dying and more! (I might even share my Mom’s Easter Pizza recipe with you!)

From Your Green Grocer

“Ask not what you can do for your country. Ask what's for lunch.” – Orson Welles

And speaking of lunch, why not try a sandwich or salad with a head of organic lettuce from Buena Tierra Farms in Fredonia, TX? Right now, we have green leaf and romaine, but there are rumors of red iceberg lettuce on the way! We’ve also got a bit of green kale from Buena Tierra, but supplies are limited as they are allowing the plants to rebound after their most recent harvest. Buena Tierra’s delicious, aromatic bunched basil is still available as well.

We’re still hyped about our local strawberries from Oak Hill Farms. Come try the strawberries that won Grand Champion at the Strawberry Festival in Poteet – Strawberry Capital of Texas! While they’re great alone or with a dollop for crème fraiche, we like them best with some cubed organic ataulfo mango. Ataulfo mangos are yellow in color and smaller than a Tommy Atkins or Kent mango, with a creamy consistency and possess a delicious flavor. While there are many ways, here’s how we like to dice a mango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYnIe3iknKo&feature=related

Come meet Joe Rosanova of Austin Organics! A bit of advanced notice, but we’re having a sampling event on Earth Day (Friday, April 22). Joe Rosanova, the man behind Austin Organics, will be here from 4pm – 7pm to talk about his operation (the only certified organic hydroponic farm in Texas) and his yummy salad mixes. You’ll have the opportunity to try all of them, so stop by and become a believer!

And remember to come in next weekend, when we will be featuring a wonderful array of treats for Earth Day and Easter Weekend, from a sustainable Catfish Fry on the hot bar for Good Friday April 22, to Easter treats in our bakery all weekend and a wonderful Easter Brunch hot bar on Sunday April 24!

As the weather keeps getting warmer, our cool Deli drinks are more popular than ever! So much so that we are now featuring a Grab’n’Go Beverage Box in front of the Deli Counter filled with our icy beverages for you to grab with no wait!
