Rolling into Summer

Wheatsville Logo

Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Memorial Day Weekend is quickly approaching and we're happily gearing up for summer! We just got in some tasty Texas watermelons, Johnson's Backyard Garden Basil and sweet bi-corn from J&B Farms. More grilling and Memorial Day ideas below.

On Sunday, May 27th, we'll be hosting a Bike Donation Drive for Austin's Yellow Bike Project. If you have a tired bike that needs a little TLC bring it by the store from 10am - 4pm. YBP will fix them up and donate them back to Austin area non-proits and events. This is the kind of reduce, reuse, reCYCLE we LOVE!

Currently, Yellow Bike is encouraging donations of children's bikes and adolescent-sized 24"-wheeled bikes for kids to ride with the Major Taylor Club in the Juneteenth Parade. Adult-sized bikes are needed as well, and always be happily accepted!

We also wanted to thank everyone who peddled by our refueling stating on Bike to Work Day! We had around 150 folks stop by, including a visitor from Philly who has been commuting by bike since 1971. He said he jogs for excercise though... !

Thanks again to all of our sponsors who donated food for the morning commuters: Red Rabbit Cooperative Bakery,Texas Daily Harvest,Thunderbird Energetica, KIND, Mmmpanadas, Rockstar Bagels, Chameleon Cold Brew, Fontana Coffee Roasters, Kosmic Kombucha, and Columbia Gorge! You guys rock (and roll)!

WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now!

This week we are loving Red Rabbit Cooperative Bakery! Why?

  • Three words - Raspberry Filled Donuts
  • Their new baked goodies are amazing! Apple Fritters, Cinnamon Cardamom Rolls and Donut Holes, OH MY!
  • It's all delicious - and VEGAN too! A win, win for everyone!

Memorial Day Watermelon

This week, our two featured produce items create an interesting but delicious pairing: watermelon and basil. I don't know who thought up this combination but I owe them my thanks!

These days, our basil is organically grown by our friends at Johnson's Backyard Garden and comes in huge, beautiful bunches.  Trim the ends and put it in a glass of water on your kitchen countertop.  It should stay fresh for several days. Our watermelon is seedless, juicy, flavorful, and Texas grown. Try them together. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Memorial Day Grilling

Memorial Day is on Monday and cooking outdoors is the traditional way to celebrate. Hot dogs and sausages are always a popular favorite and can be dressed up in lots of creative ways - from saurkraut to chili - just don't forget the buns!

1% of total Wednesday store sales to Austin's Yellow Bike Project! If you can't shop today consider donating your reusable bag and container credits - a $1 donation at the register will get you a perfectly stickable, pride inducing Yellow Bike Project sticker.

Got a tired bike that needs a new home? Well, you can donate that too!  Drop your bikes off at Wheatsville's this Sunday, May 27th from 10am-4pm at our Bike Donation Drive. YBP will take it off your hands, give it a make-over at their Webberville shop, and release them back into the community.  They are especially encouraging donations of kids' bikes and adolescent-sized 24"-wheeled bikes.

Thanks again to all our shoppers and owners for your contributions to our Community Action Program this month.  Because of your donations, Yellow Bike Project is on its way to setting yet another record!

New at Wheatsville

We’re welcoming summer with a fresh infusion of new locally brewed kombuchas, vegan sliders, crunchy snacks and more.

Austin's own Thunderbird Energetica specializes in creating epic tasting whole food energy bars containing uniquely pure and highly powerful ingredients. Thunderbird bars provide consumers with conveniently packaged, nutrient dense, plant-based goodness. New to Thunderbird's line of bars is the Hyper Hawaiian Crunch, an energizing blend of tropical mango, papaya, and pineapple in a crunchy-sweet base of prunes and buckwheat groats. All Thunderbird bars are handmade and packaged in biodegradable wrappers. 2oz, Reg. $2.49

In 2008, the students and teachers of Breath and Body Yoga were introduced to a locally brewed kombucha and instantly became fans of the ancient elixir. When the local brewer stopped production, a group of yogis decided to fill the void, and Kosmic Kombucha was born. Kosmic Kombucha is brewed in Austin with organic ingredients and fresh produce from local markets. Previously, Kosmic was available only in glass half-gallon jugs. Wheatsville now offers Kosmic Kombucha in single serve 16oz bottles, in a variety of unique new flavors!
Ginger & Mary Ann soothes, with organic ginger and a touch of maple; Black Magic gets its mysterious tint from blackberries, raspberries, ginger and spirulina; Purple Haze is a fruit-herbal-floral blend of grape juice, lime, cinnamon, lavender and clove; and the Salty Dog is a citrusy punch of grapefruit, orange, lemon and lime, with a light kiss of sea salt.
16oz, Reg. $3.59

Gardein's new Meatless Sliders (sold frozen) pack four mini vegan burgers-- buns included-- in each box. Grill or fry a patty then toast the buns separately and add any ingredients desired. Eat all four sliders for only 12 grams of fat! Take that, White Castle.
10oz, Reg. $4.99

You'll do a double-take when you try Kettle's new Reduced Fat Potato Chips. Loaded with the same bold, all-natural flavor you expect and a sturdy krinkle cut, but with 40% less fat and only 130 calories per serving. They're so delicious; you might just eat the whole bag! 8oz, Reg. $3.29

Blending organic and raw kombucha, chia seeds, and juice, GT’s Black Chia and Green Chia are two fun new additions to the wildly popular line of chia beverages. The chia seeds add natural thickness and chew to the drinks and also manage (with the help of the juice) to cut the fermented flavor substantially. The result is several layers of flavor, including tart, sweet, and vinegar. Functionally, the drinks have all of the probiotics and enzymes found in other GT’s products, plus added omega-3, fiber, and antioxidants from the chia seeds. GT's Black Chia takes its name from an infusion of black currant juice, while the Green Chia gets its emerald hue from a healthful dose of chlorophyll. 16oz, Reg. $2.99
