Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

I hope that all of you are keeping cool and enjoying the many delicious tastes of summer!

We're excited for the 4th of July weekend coming right up! We have everything you need for a delicious and healthy celebration. Whether you're picnicking, grilling or chilling in the living room, we've got cold beverages and fun-time foods ready for you. Shop early—we will be closing at 9pm on the 4th of July so our staff can enjoy the holiday evening.

New Community Action Group - Emancipet

Emancipet advocates for and provides free and low-cost spay/neuter services throughout the Central Texas area via both mobile and stationary clinics, and serves between 1,200 – 2,000 pets each month.

Emancipet will receive 1% of our Wednesday sales in July as well as additional cash and reusable bag credit donations that shoppers make at the register. In addition, we will be hosting a pet food drivethroughout the month. All items must be factory sealed and donation boxes are located near the exit doors.

June Community Action Recap: This past month, Wheatsville raised over $2,400 for Out Youth! This was a combination of four Community Action Wednesdays and additional donations made by shoppers. Thank you so much for your generosity and to Out Youth for supplying us with hand-made bracelets!

This week's One Big Thing

WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now! Our enthusiasm for summer fruit continues with TEXAS WATERMELONS as the One Big Thing—for the second time this season!

What do we like about Texas watermelons?

1)    Each Texas watermelon is just $5.99!

2)    Not sure you can eat a whole Texas watermelon? Just ask one of our friendly produce clerks to cut it into halves or quarters.

3)    Texas watermelons also contain immunity-boosting vitamins A, B6 and C, along with potassium, a mineral essential for water balance inside your cells.

For even more information about the benefits of eating Texas watermelons, as well as serving suggestions for this sweet, juicy, refreshing fruit, check out the health and nutrition section of National Watermelon Promotion Board. Or taste it for yourself! Stop by Wheatsville's produce department and try a slice—our produce staff truly enjoys offering samples to curious customers!

From Your Greengrocer

Happy Summer! We hope you're staying cool as the temperatures hover around the three-digit mark. One of our perennial hot weather favorites is Red Seeded Watermelon. Great for picnicking! Seed spitting contests! After-swim treats! We've got some beauties, organically grown by the folks atBuena Tierra Farm in Fredonia. Your window of opportunity to get one of these fantastic watermelons is closing soon – today is the last delivery of them we'll see this year. Get one early for your Fourth of July picnic or barbeque – we likely won't have them come Monday. In fact, why not buy two? They'll hold in your refrigerator for a good week and a half to two weeks if you don't cut them.

Not to be satisfied with growing the most delicious, juiciest, melt-in-your mouth watermelons, Buena Tierra has also outdone themselves with the incredible crop of heirloom melons they're bringing us:Israeli melons, Galias, Crenshaws, Honey Pearls, and Tuscan cantaloupes – all picked at the height of ripeness and guaranteed to be better than any melon you've ever eaten!

Check out this recipe for agua fresca I posted a few weeks ago. The recipe calls for watermelon, but I made up a batch with a Galia melon this week and it was unbelievable! Our deli has been rocking our taste buds with their cucumber agua fresca and it gets the gears going – what would work in an agua fresca? Experiment!

Agua Fresca:

2 cups cold water
1 cup ice
2 cups watermelon, cut into 1-inch pieces (or any cut fruit*)
1/4 cup sugar, or to taste
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice

Directions: Put all ingredients in a blender and blend on high speed until completely smooth. Pour blended liquid through a fine sieve into a container, pressing on solids to exude as much liquid as possible. Chill. Stir before serving.

Makes about 5 cups, enough for 4 servings.

*Fruit: good choices are honeydew, cantaloupe, mango (use 1 cup, about 1 small mango), pineapple with a few fresh basil leaves, cucumber, strawberries (halved) with a few fresh mint leaves, papaya, seedless red grapes (whole).—Adam King, Produce Manager

Tipsy Cow Sausage is made with Niman Ranch Black Angus Beef, smoky ancho chilies, and Northcoast Brewery's Pranqster beer. The ancho chilies lend a very mild heat with some subtle smoke, while the Pranqster brings a bold Belgian Style Ale flavor to the party.

We have plenty of other sausage options to keep in mind for the Fourth of July. A plethora of Niman Ranch choices are ready for your grill. The Thai Style Sausage is unique with its complex flavors. Pederson's Kielbasa and JalapeƱo large link Sausages are great for grilling and great diced in salads, or in pasta dishes. The Feta and Spinach Chicken Sausage is a great new addition to our shelves that is great on its own or as a component to a larger dish.

Hot Dogs. A Fourth of July classic. The Tanka Buffalo Dogs are hands down one of the best Hot Dogs I have ever had. So much flavor and buffalo to boot. The Niman Ranch Uncured Fearless Hot Dogsare a great dog as well.

Although the Copper River season is drawing to a close, the rest of Alaska has opened up for Sockeyefishing. These premium fish are the same species, just as fresh and look and taste great. Our produce department has just received fresh figs, grown here in Austin. Figs make a wonderful complement to some of our fresh cheeses. I particularly like figs with Pure Luck Dairy's Ste. Maure. What an ode to the joy of summer is this combination! The delicate sweetness of the fig plays well to the tanginess of the Ste. Maure. It is a light but satisfying meal. —Cap'n Greg Flores, Cheesemonger
