Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Breaking News!

Peaches are here! From Rhew Orchards southeast of San Antonio come a new crop of delicious yellow peaches, on our shelves now. You may have heard about the devastating frost damage which wiped out the peach crop in the hill country around Fredericksburg this winter. While extremely unfortunate, there will be plenty of peaches from other parts of the state. Rhew Orchards utilizes composting techniques to grow healthy soil and does not spray pesticides. Modestly priced at $2.49/lb, they’re juicy and flavorful. Peach pie, anyone?

Yellow Bike Project Stickers for $1 Donation

This month’s Community Action Group is Austin’s Yellow Bike Project. They are an all-volunteer initiative to put bicycles on the streets of Austin and Central Texas by operating community bike shops, teaching bike mechanics and maintenance, and acting as a local bike advocacy group. To help raise donations for them, we are offering YBP stickers to customers who donate $1 or more to the project during the month of May. Donations can be added on to your purchases at the register when you shop. Stop by and get one while supplies last!

It’s berry season in Texas! The strawberries were a big hit this year, and while we may see a few here or there, they’re pretty much done for the year. Blueberries have replaced them and they are so good!

While it may be too hot for strawberries in Texas, they’re still going strong in California. We love the two pound cartons of organic strawberries from Driscoll. These berries are so beautiful and delicious, we guarantee your mind will be blown. They’re under $4 per pound, so you're definitely getting a good deal.

Some interesting things are coming down the local pike. Homegrown tomatoes are coming on, we’re getting just 100 pounds of organic early girl tomatoes from Angel Valley Organic Farm in Jonestown (located 25 miles northwest of Austin – check the website: www.angelvalleyfarms.com/), but more should be on their way from other growers as well. Right now, I’m looking at a beautiful purple bell pepper grown by Alex and Donna Bernhardt from Elgin. While quantities are a bit limited, we should see some of these babies on our shelves this weekend. This week, I met with Scott Harris, a man who grows some amazing sustainably grown sunflowers and other wildflowers. Check out his website at www.flowerfarmerscott.com for more information. We should see the first delivery of his flowers this Thursday, May 19th. I’m really excited to be able to offer Wheatsville’s owners an alternative to imported flowers.

Continuing on the local tip, we’re still seeing big showings from Buena Tierra Farms (Fredonia, TX) and Johnson’s Backyard Garden (Southeast Austin). Check it out: zucchini, yellow squash, bunched carrots, fennel, broccoli, basil, daikon radish, bunched beets (red and gold), green garlic, bok choy, parsley, bunched turnips, savoy cabbage, romaine lettuce, all organic and all locally grown! Come by and take a look! Right now our produce department’s shelves are stocked full of local produce – 20% of our department is produce grown in Texas! We’re making a commitment to holding that line, and increasing that number. The more locally grown produce our members buy, the more incentive we have to convince farmers to adopt sustainable and organic growing practices which honor the Earth. Thanks for doing your part!
