We truly truly appreciate your support and are glad that so many of you came out to be appreciated! 2,600 of you saved over $22,000 last week! Wow, that's a lot of economic benefit from being a co-op owner!

Kosmic Krunch!

I'd like to remind you about our delicious new raw granola "Orange-Cranberry Kosmic Krunch".  If you haven't tried it already you're missing out!  This wonderful product is raw, vegan, gluten-free, and super tasty, and it comes to us from the fine folks at Kosmic Kombucha, right here in Austin.  This granola is made with all raw Pecans, Medjool dates, grade B maple syrup, Almonds, and a variety of dried fuits and seeds. We'll be offering free samples of this tasty treat throughout the weekend in the Bulk department, so be sure to stop by and try some!

Organic and Fair trade Action Items

We've got two action items for you to consider today.

The first requires fast action to sign a petition regarding the pending USDA approval of GMO Alfalfa. This decision could have disastrous and far reaching effects on the entire organic industry and we encourage you to read more and possibly sign the petition here: http://www.rodaleinstitute.org/20110120_action-stop-gmo-alfalfa-contamination

The second is about the term "Fair Trade" and the apparent attempt by Transfair USA to possibly try and copyright it. We tend to believe that it's a movement, not one company, even if it's a non-profit and don't really like the apparent attempt to "own" the name by TransFair. Check more out about it here: http://organicconsumers.org/transfairusa/index.cfm

From Your Green Grocer

This week, we're seeing even more fantastic citrus varieties coming through our back door.  New arrivals this week include Fairchild tangerines, Royal Mandarins, and Gold Nugget Tangerines. The gold nuggets are our current favorite: they have a rich, sweet flavor, plenty of juice, and no seeds.  Easy to peel, easy to please!  The gold nugget's peel is a bit thicker and sturdier than a Satsuma, which makes them a good choice in a lunchbox.  You can throw one in your purse or bag and know you'll not find a squished, wet mess at the bottom a few hours later.  Pick up a few for$1.99/lb.

With all these citrus varieties, we thought we should have a tasting event and celebrate.  This Sunday from 1p-3p, we're having a citrus sampling.  Come by and try some old favorites, and maybe make a new one!

This week, we are also seeing some nice local produce offerings.  Red, Gold, and White(!!) bunched beets are in from Oak Hill Farms in Poteet, TX.  We're super excited to see more locally grown broccoli crowns, this time from The Farm Patch in Pleasanton, TX.  Sustainably grown broccoli crowns for $2.49/lb? Can't be beat!

On another local note, I'm excited to announce the Wheatsville Local Produce Summit. It'll be held on Monday, February 7th, with the goal of broadening our local selection and supporting more local agriculture.  We want any local farmers who can make it to come.  If you know someone who might be interested, please refer them to me (aking@wheatsville.com) and I'll give them more details.  2011 is going to be a great year for eating locally.  Stick around and see what happens!

Get ready for Valentines Day!

Sweets for Your Sweetie!

Valentine's Day is still a few weeks away but we already have lots of cute cards and gifts for your special someone.  Set a romantic mood by drawing a luxurious bath and brewing an aphrodisiac tea with our bulk Red Rose Buds & Petals and Damiana Leaf, both are less than $1.00 per ounce!  Find the perfect card to express your love with our beautiful selections from local favorites FlatFlower Botanical Cards.  We even have convenient 20-count valentine packs for your kiddos to hand out to classmates.

Damiana and Rose Petals available from bulk herbs for Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day only comes once a year and so does this seasonal offer! Those hopeless romantics in bulk herbs and teas have brought you Damiana Leaf $13.19lb/ $.82 oz and Rose, Red Buds & Petals $11.49 lb/ $.71 oz for your sipping or soaking pleasure (you can use both as a tea OR bath!).

While Rose's delicate and intoxicating fragrance needs no introduction, you may not know that Cleopatra used this famous flower to seduce Mark Antony. Passion-inducing Damiana, while lesser known, has been used traditionally to help sweethearts spice up their love life and contains antidepressive and mood elevating properties. Both are great in an after dinner tea, sprinkled in a bath, or infused in your favorite wine! Here's a simple formula that's sure to impress your special someone this Valentine's day:

1) Start with your favorite red wine (a higher alcohol content is better for extraction, especially when using fresh herbs).

2) Choose you favorite aromatic herbs: Ginger, mints, liccorice or cinnamon for a stimulating effect. Oatstraw, lavender, sage, and catnip for a calming blend. Rose or damiana for love - or choose your own favorites!

3) Combine herbs and wine either in a mason jar or the bottle itself if it has a screw-top, and let it sit for two weeks (shaking occassionally).

4) Separate out herbs before serving with a cheesecloth or a mesh strainer.

Serve with chocolates and a romantic string quartet!

From the world of meat

Unfortunately we have not been able to stock one the best products we offer in the meat department, the Dewberry Hills whole chickens, but Jane and Terry have provided us with an explanation for why we can't get their delectable birds right now.

At Dewberry Hills farm, we pride ourselves on raising chickens right and supplying Wheatsville with the very freshest birds available in Central Texas.

However, the hatchery that supplies us with our chicks does not ship to us over the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Years.

This allows them to rest their hens and also prevents the chicks being delayed in shipping by the volume of holiday mail at that time.

As a result, we experience three weeks every year when we do not have chickens for sale.

We also do not keep our birds inside and under artificial lights or use antibiotics so the chickens grow more slowly at this time of year.

Although we hate disappointing our Wheatsville friends, this is part of really being both local and sustainable.

Terry and I thank you for your continued support patience and expect to have birds in the store very soon.

Jane Levan

In the Sea Food case we have Arctic Cod for $13.99 reg. $14.79. We get this cod from Northern Fish. It is sustainable and very versatile in the kitchen. Good for baking, grilling and frying.

For example that means if you were to buy six bottles of Sangre de Toro for $7.99 each regularly $8.49 you would pay $39.35 instead of $53.49! Now is the time to stock your wine cellar because the more you buy the more you save!

New in Grocery!

There are dozens of new items in the Grocery aisles this week!  Thank you so much for all of your helpful suggestions, as most of these items were found on the Wheatsville Wish List (found at the Hospitality Desk).

Rice Select is a local company (Alvin, TX 77511) that grows all natural, quality rice.  All of the jars they use for packaging are BPA free and are excellent to re-use around the house.  I re-use mine for all my bulk grains and baking supplies and their square shape makes them look oh so nice lined up in my pantry.  We currently have the following varieties in aisle 2:

Organic White Texmati 36 oz $6.99

Organic Brown Texmati 36 oz $6.99

Rice Medleys in Mushroom, Vegetable and Pilaf varieties $3.79

Pearl Cous cous in Original and Tri-color 11.5 oz $3.79

Arborio 36 oz $6.39 (the perfect rice for risotto, see the recipe below, courtesy of http://www.RiceSelect.com)

Easy Risotto
1 cup uncooked rice
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 cups chicken or vegetable broth
salt and pepper (optional)

In large saucepan, sauté onion in oil and butter for 3 minutes. Add rice, stirring for about 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup of broth; continue cooking and stirring until liquid is absorbed. Gradually stir in remaining broth 1 cup at a time, cooking and stirring until liquid is absorbed before adding the next cup. Serve immediately.

While Risotto does take a bit of time and attention, it is worth every minute!  It's warm and hearty and easily customizable!  You can add pretty much anything you like to it; my favorites are broccoli and chicken (cooked) or butternut squash, YUM!

During the Holidays, we were asked for a lot of baking items that we didn't have and didn't know we were missing.  Now, we have them!  Come check them out in aisle 3!

Dr. Oetker's Vanilla cake mix $2.99/box makes a very fine cake.

Arrowhead Mills Gluten Free Millet Flour 32 oz $4.59 and Wheat Free Barley Flour 24 oz $3.89

Bob's Red Mill is an awesome manufacturer of superior grains and baking products.  We already offer a huge selection of their products and joining the line-up are:

Potato Flour (gluten free) 24 oz $5.49

Premium Instant Milk Powder 26 oz $8.99

Golden Corn Flour 24 oz $2.99

Artisana Raw Nut Butters in single serving packages are here for just $1.79 each! Now you can sample a variety of these delicious, healthy treats without spending $$ for the larger jars.  We have Coconut Butter, Cacao Bliss, Cashew, Almond, Walnut and Pecan. These little packets are great for Lunch boxes or for an on-the-go quick snack.  Find them in aisle 3 in our new and improving Raw Foods section.

And finally, we are pleased and proud to sell Thunderbird Energetica Raw Food Bars.  These bars are hand-made here in Austin, and just hit our shelves on Tuesday.  Already, they are a hit with the staff and customers alike.  Thunderbird Energetica bars come in three flavors:  Cherry Walnut Crunch, Cacao Hemp Walnut and Cashew Fig Carrot. Also, Zico has a new flavor: Piña Tropicale that blends citrus and pineapple flavors to create what some people are saying is the best one yet! The sale is good through January 31st, enjoy!

Local Pecans in Bulk

I'm very excited to announce the addition of a tasty new product in the Bulk department.  We now have Local Organic Pecans!  These pecans come from a small farm called Whispering Hills Organic Pecan Orchard located in Hunt, TX.  We've carried these pecans in the bulk department before and they were a big hit so I am very pleased to have them back.  These are very high quality and very tasty pecans grown on a small farm, so stop on by the Bulk department and give them a try!

From your Green Grocer

This week, we're highlighting a local product that's returned to our shelves after a few months' absence: Austin Sea Veggies Ogonori Seaweed. Ogonori is a light, delicate seaweed that's usually eaten raw and cold.  It can also be added to soups, but should be treated delicately to preserve its texture: use it as a garnish, don't cook it.  Ogonori has a great crunchy texture that is especially nice on salads.  Check out their website for more info: http://austinseaveggies.com/

Our favorite seasonal produce item this week is the organic meyer lemon.  Meyers came from China originally, and were grown as ornamental trees until their culinary characteristics were discovered in the early 1900s.  Meyer lemons are thought to be a cross between a normal lemon and a mandarin or orange, though no one knows for sure.  They have a thinner, edible skin than a normal lemon and people sometimes pass them up, thinking they are over-ripe or bad.  Meyers are aromatic and have a sweeter flavor and are less sour than a normal lemon. They are much less acidic, too.  They can be used in place of a lemon in any dish.  The Meyers we're carrying now are grown right here in Texas!  People in other parts of the country can't get them as easily as we can, and the price is usually prohibitive.  Give one a shot!

Seasonal Allergy Relief

Cedar is on the rise again. Local Allergy forecast have Cedar reaching high levels again during the next couple of days. Because we care about your allergy suffering AND we're suffering through it, too, we've prepared a short list of thing syou might consider to help give you some allergy relief.

Firstly, you  might want to try one of our allergy relief products that are on special! This time it's on the Garden of Life Immune Balance Sinus formula. Normally $14.99, we are taking 25% off and offering it for $11.24 from 1/20 through 1/26.

Immune Balance Sinus from Garden of Life is a dynamic, broad-spectrum immunity formula that provides multidimensional support for seasonal sinus and respiratory health and wellness. Immune Balance Sinus works naturally to support a balanced immune system response for seasonal protection of sinus and respiratory health.

Add Nettles to Your Anti-Allergy Arsenal!

(ON SALE THIS WEEK in bulk herbs!)

Allergy season ain't over yet (is it ever?) and if you're still suffering from the symptoms, it may be time to spruce up your regiment. Nettles $1.03/oz is a known natural antihistamine, and is great for relieving allergy symptoms because it reduces inflammation in the nasal cavities. Nettles boosts immunity as a free radical fighting antioxidant and is a delicious weapon against allergy attacks as a tea or as an addition to culinary dishes. Try adding it to miso soup like I do when I'm feeling under the weather – you can be as creative as you like and still reap the great benefits! High in calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and lots MORE – nutrient rich nettles packs a punch and is 25% off this week at your co-op!

GOT ALLERGIES?  TRY A NETI POT!!

The neti pot is fast becoming the hottest allergy relief solution in the country during an exceptionally severe allergy season.  How does it work?  Basically, using a neti pot allows allergy sufferers to thin mucus and flushes out nasal passages thereby removing bacteria, allergens, and other irritants that can cause sinus problems—just mix ¼ teaspoon of non-iodized sea salt in 8 ounces of warm water in your neti pot until dissolved and flush away!    Wheatsville carries several varieties of neti pots—from ceramic and bioplastic (great for travelling) to the Nasaline which is a nasal irrigator.  All are around $15.00 bucks, which when considering the cost of a visit to the ol' allergy Doctor seems pretty reasonable.  We also carry several varieties of nasal cleaning salts and solutions to support healthy nasal passages.  So the next time the sneezing, watery eyes, and sinus headaches start coming on consider trying  a neti pot--  it may provide immediate relief and help keep those annoying                                                                                                             symptoms from coming back!

How about some soup to fix what ails you? (Thanks to Rosie Weaver, Wheatsville Owner and Dan's wife for this recipe.)

Six Wonders Curative Soup

1/2" knob of Fresh Ginger

3 Fresh Shitake (or dried shitake pre-soaked in hot water for 10 minutes)

3 cups water

1 Tablespoon Miso (or to taste)

3 cloves Garlic, minced

1 cup chopped fresh Parsley

Cayenne to taste

Slice the ginger and shitakes and bring to a boil in the water. Simmer for 5 - 10 minutes. Turn off the heat.

Blend a quarter cup of the broth with the miso to make a paste. Stir the paste into the main soup.

Add the parsley, garlic, and cayenne. Taste and add more miso and cayenne as needed. It should be spicy enough to make your nose run!

Return to flame only until warm - do not cook.

Incredible Bulk, Owner Appreciation, Recipes, Samples and a Marching Band?!?!

Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

I hope the winter has been treating you well and giving you chances to drink hot tea, bake or cook in your kitchen and snuggle up with loved ones!

We are super excited this week for a couple of reasons!

First, we're having our Staff Appreciation Party Thursday night. It's a great chance for us to show our thanks for the great work our staff do all year long and gives us a chance to have fun together! BUT, in order to make it happen, we do need to close a little early. We'll close at 9PM on Thursday so that staff can attend the party. Thanks for your understanding and support!

We're also excited because we appreciate you, too! This weekend starts Owner Appreciation Days. We'll give you a 10% discount off on one shopping trip of your choice any time between 1/15 and 1/23. Might I suggest you plan your shopping trip earlier than later? The last weekend can get pretty jammed up around here with last minute Appreciating, so you may have a more mellow shop if you do it sooner than later!

And, to induce you to come in early, we have some fun stuff lined up for this Saturday! We'll have lots of free samples throughout the store from 1-3 including a wine tasting! Then, at 3pm, we'll be joined by our friends the Minor Mishap marching band. They'll be playing for fun and to help promote the Wheatsville sponsored Honk! TX community Band festival coming to a park near you March 11-13 Learn more about the band and Honk! TX. http://www.facebook.com/minormishapmarchingband

We hope to see you this week!

Bulk is our One Big Thing this week

Each week our staff pick one thing that we're especially excited about and this week we want to extol the virtues of an entire department, one of our favorites, BULK Foods!

The Joys of Shopping in Bulk

So, we're going to share the joys and merits of shopping in the bulk department, especially for those of you who are new to bulk shopping, or who have never tried it before.

Buying in Bulk reduces waste! Its great to see more and more people concerned with reducing waste from packaging these days, and the best way to do this by far is by not using it at all.  By bringing your own containers from home (or making use of the re-usable containers in the department), and buying your staple needs in bulk, you can significantly reduce the amount of packaging you use on a day to day basis.  With all of the fresh hi-quality foods available in bulk, from nuts to cereals to candy to coffee, I think you'll be surprised by how much of you're shopping you can do this way.

Buying in Bulk saves MONEY! One of our favorite reasons for bulk shopping is the real value of it. There really is no more affordable way to live a healthy lifestyle.  When you get in the habit of basing the cooking you do at home around the dried organic options in bulk, such as quinoa or brown rice or red lentils, you'll be very surprised by how inexpensive a quality organic meal can be.  The ability to purchase just as much as you need for any particular meal makes it even more affordable and convenient.

Buying bulk is fun! Since you can buy as much or as little as you want or need, the bulk department offers up a perfect chance to experiment with new foods! Curious about Quinoa (keen-wah) Never had basmati rice? Interested in Israeli Couscous? Buy a little in bulk and you may find a new favorite!

If you've never tried it before, I think you'll be very pleased to find out how convenient and rewarding shopping in bulk can be.  If you're ever unsure about any product in the department, don't be shy to ask for a sample!  The bulk department really does offer a bounty of fresh and exciting options so please stop on by and check them out! And, we're happy to help you shop in bulk if you need assistance, just ask us!

New Local Goodness in Bulk

I'm very proud to announce that the bulk department is now carrying a great new product from the fine folks at Kosmic Kombucha.  It's called Kosmic Krunch and it's a delicious Orange-Cranberry flavored raw granola.  This granola is made with all raw Pecans, Medjool dates, grade B maple syrup and a variety of nuts and seeds, and it's great with yogurt or just on its own.  Kosmic Kombucha is a local Austin company making very high quality raw and vegan products and I am very happy to be carrying this tasty new addition of theirs.

I'm also excited to announce that Organic Walnuts are on Co+op deals this month for only $7.99/lb reg. $9.99.  This is a really great deal so be sure to stop on by the Bulk department and pick some up!

LIMITED TIME ONLY!
Wheatsville Owner produced Texas Pecans!

From Wheatsville owner Booka Michael's Rancho Pancho in Hunt, Texas,
100% All Natural shelled pecans conveniently packaged in a "generous" one pound bag. These nuts are naturally dried for two weeks and husked by hand. They are SO delicious. Eat them out of the bag, toast them for your next salad, or use them to bake pecan brownies. He only has about 100 pounds to sell, so it's first come first serve. They are by the front door in the produce department next to the display of Kabocha and Delicate Squash. Bake a squash and add toasted pecans for a hearty winter treat! (When I brought these pecans home the other night, my wife and 5 year old literally cheered with delight.)

Create your own wine cellar during Owner Appreciation!

Did you know that when you buy six bottles or more of wine for owner appreciation you get 10% off in addition to the 10% you get off for being an owner! For example that means if you were to buy six bottles of Sangre de Toro for $7.99 each regularly $8.49 you would pay $39.35 instead of $53.49! Now is the time to stock your wine cellar because the more you buy the more you save!

Greetings from the Wheatsville Deli!

This week in our co+op deals we have our delicious Food Bar for $6.99lb. (reg. $7.99lb.) This includes all of our in-house prepared hot bar lunch and dinners, the entire tiny briny bar, and our fresh salad bar! If you have a sweet tooth, we are featuring local bakery Sweetish Hill's Cherry Cream Cheese Danish for $1.99 (reg. $2.29). The yummy Full Quiver Cheese Spreads found on Cheese Island go great with our own local Rockstar Bagels, remember if you buy 5, the 6th is FREE! Warm up from the cold snap with our award winning Tempeh Chili and Fresh Baked Cornbread, try it with aHot Gingerade for $1.69 to beat your allergy blues. As always your friendly deli staff is available to make your perfect custom-made sandwich or taco to order! Enjoy!

Sharpen it up on Cheese Island

Our New York Sharp Cheddar will be on sale for $6.99/lb, regularly $9.99/lb. Adam King, our produce manager, is raving about the Pink Lady apples.  A Sharp Cheddar and an apple with bite, sounds like a wonderful snack.

This Saturday and Sunday, January 15th and 16th, we will be hosting all store sampling days. Sampling will start at 1 p.m. and end at 3 p.m. Come sample some of our delicious products and meet some of our vendors.

From your Green Grocer

Our featured local item this week is Texas Organic Rio Star Grapefruit.  Such a great way to get a good shot of Vitamin C.  They're beautiful with deep red flesh – not too tart but with plenty of flavor, they don't need sugar.  Try one with breakfast!  I think they go great alongside a bowl of oatmeal.  Nicely priced at $1.59/lb.

Our featured seasonal item this week is the beautiful, antioxidant packed Organic Pomegranate. They're huge – almost the size of a softball – and so delicious right now.  Plus, they're a great price, only $1.49 each! They are a bit of a mess to eat, but rewarding!  Some people eat the seeds.  I usually chew on them a while until I've got a wad of them and then find a way to discreetly spit it out.  It's up to you.

If chilly weather makes you run for the kitchen, you're not alone.  Cooking up warm, comforting foods helps stave off the winter blues.  This week, we've got three great winter cooking ingredients on sale: Organic Acorn Squash for 99¢/lb, Organic Red Potatoes for 99¢/lb, and Organic Bunched Spinach for $1.29 each.

My favorite way to eat spinach is in saag paneer.  Fantastic over basmati rice, this creamy spinach dish will become a fast favorite.  I found an easy recipe athttp://www.indiasnacks.com/recipe/662/Saag-Paneer.php but once you've made it one or two times, it's simple enough to just wing it.

I love herb roasted red potatoes – they're easy and tasty.  I like to boil the potatoes whole until they're about half cooked – this reduces the time you have to roast them.  Then, you just let them cool, quarter them, coat with olive oil and some salt and pepper and your choice of herbs.  Pretty much any herb will be great – rosemary, sage, thyme, oregano, or dill.  Roast them till they brown.  Yum!

I found a great idea for using two of our featured produce items this week:

Acorn squash with pomegranate sauce.

The pomegranate sauce can be made by combining 6 parts pomegranate seeds, 1 part sugar, and 1/2 part lemon juice.  You can safely estimate these numbers.  If you like, you can add some pumpkin pie spices to this sauce: nutmeg, allspice, or cinnamon.  Cook on a stovetop, mashing the seeds as you go.  Simmer for about an hour, let cool, and strain with cheesecloth.

You cook the acorn squash normally: cut in half, scoop out the seeds, slice the squash, oil it and spread the slices on a baking sheet.  Drizzle the pomegranate sauce over the squash slices, cook for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.  Flip the squash over, drizzle again with pom sauce, cook for another 15 minutes.  It's done when you can easily insert a fork into the squash.

Happy Winter!

Cedar Fever/Allergy Special!

Last week's sale on Herbalogic Easy Breather was so popular that Herbalogic and Wheatsville have agreed to extend the sale for another week. That means you can get Herbalogic Easy Breather for$14.99 for another week! That's 25% off! If you missed the sale last week, want to stock up, and/or want to get a bottle for a fellow allergy sufferer you have another week to save!

Easy Breather was designed to combat the cedar and juniper pollen allergy symptoms prevalent during central Texas winters. It is based on the classic Chinese formula, Yu Ping Fang San transalated as 'Jade Wind Screen Formula', originally created to reduce susceptibility to common colds and influenza. It has been updated with the needs of Austin and Central Texas allergy sufferers in mind, with particular focus on nasal symptoms. While other traditional formulas can cause nasal dryness and excessive thirst, this formula includes herbs that moisturize the sinus passages.
