Hello Wheatsville friends and fans! Thanks for coming in and shopping with us last week during our Owner Appreciation Days! We had a lot of fun and were happy to see so many familiar faces. And to our 43 new owners who joined our co-op last week - WELCOME! We are so happy you chose to join us! January Notes: - You may see some new tags in the store near products made by co-ops. We created these in order to raise awareness for the role co-ops play in our food chain. This is just another small way you can help support a co-op economy.
- You'll also find a Just Label It! petition at the front of the store on the Hospitality Desk. The petition is asking the FDA to mandate labeling of genetically engineered foods on product packaging. You can sign at the desk or on-line. The petition has already gotten over 500,000 signatures and is well on the way to meeting the goal of 1 million. Please add your voice and help us get GMO's labeled.
- We're also very happy to be sponsoring People's Community Clinic through our Community Action Wednesday Program and Children's Book Drive this month. Please donate your gently used English & Spanish children's books in the bins at the front of our store until January 31st. The books will be distributed to children in the clinic's waiting room.
Scroll on down for:WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THINGEvery week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now! This week's One Big Thing is... Johnson's Backyard Garden Carrots! Why do we love them? 1. They're local! 2. They're organic! 3. They're so sweet & tasty! Texas Grown"Do unto those downstream as you would have those upstream do unto you." – Wendell Berry We whole-heartedly concur with that statement, which is why we support sustainable, local agriculture. While it might not be immediately apparent, winter in Texas is a great time to eat local produce! The weather is mild and rains more abundant. You won't see any Texas berries or peaches, there are plenty of citrus and cool weather greens to be had. Our Texas-grown Organic Rio Star Grapefruit is a perfect example. Grown in Hidalgo County, the heart of Texas citrus country, these big red beauties are a state treasure. A bit closer to home, Johnson's Backyard Garden is cranking out some incredible beets with greens in red, gold, and Chioggia varieties. The great thing about buying beets with the greens attached is you can eat the greens, too! Did you know that chard and beets are very closely related? So close, in fact, that they can cross-pollinate. I like to combine both beet and greens in a single dish, like this simple recipe I found on Epicurious. It can be cooked in a single skillet and only takes a half hour! The recipe can easily be tweaked with different herbs or spices. Give it a shot. - Adam, Produce Manager Zhi TeaLocal, Organic Zhi Teas at the Wheatsville Deli! We are delighted to introduce a wonderful line of local, organic Zhi Teas at the Wheatsville Deli!
