WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now!

This week we are loving our Housemade Tres Leches Cake!
Why do we love it?

  • It's soy-free AND vegan made with almond, coconut and rice milks!
  • It's a sweet cold treat on a hot summer day!
  • Single servings ready to go in our deli Grab&Go case!

Juicy

We love summertime at Wheatsville!  Having worked in produce for so many years, I always look forward to when the temperatures start to climb.  So many of my favorite fruits are in season in the summer.  You've got so many varieties of stone fruits to enjoy: cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums.  Melons galore: watermelon, cantaloupe, galia, honeydew, Crenshaw.  Berries aplenty: strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries.

This week, our Produce Picks are USA Organic Red Seedless Grapes and Organic Sungold Cherry Tomatoes from Tecolote Farm in east Austin.

The organic grapes sure felt like they took their time coming.  We were stuck with a conventional variety for several weeks and while they were nothing to sneeze at, their organic sisters are something to behold: crunchy, juicy, flavorful, and sweet.  I love them frozen especially on these hot summer days.

If you don't normally dig on tomatoes, I suggest you try the sungolds.  They'll make you a believer!  Sungolds are a prolific variety of cherry tomato and they really do taste like the name suggests: golden sweet sunlight, distilled and packaged into a bite-sized treat.  Great for eating out of hand or try cutting them in half, drizzling with some olive oil, mix in some chopped basil and mozzarella, and shake on a bit of salt and pepper.  An easy caprese salad that nobody can turn down.

- Adam, Produce Manager

Beat the Heat with Tiny Treats

This summer we made room for a new assortment of refrigerated bakery items, so come on in and try a fruity Blueberry Coconut Tartlet, decadent slice of creamy vegan Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, refreshing Cranberry-Blueberry Muffin Parfait layered with local, nonfat yogurt, a cool, tart Lemon Bar, or our new staff favorite – soy-free, vegan Tres Leches Cake! This delicious cake is just sweet enough, and drenched with a syrup made from almond, coconut and rice milks for a wonderful summertime treat. Come in and check out our summertime offerings today!

Also new and available from our bakery table are our adorable Sour Cream Coffeecake Mini-Bundt Cakes! Drizzled with a delectable sour cream glaze, these tender cakes, layered with a cinnamon-sugar streusel, are the perfect accompaniment to one of our fair-trade, organic espresso drinks, or a glass of ice cold milk!

And our bakery's new Community Action Cookies are here! This month our buttery, hand-decorated sugar cut-out cookies are shaped like cute little animal paws, with a yummy chocolate glaze, to raise awareness for our July Community Action Wednesday donation recipients Austin Pets Alive! Look for them in our bakery case!

Summer Grilling

This week is a great opportunity to take advantage of your Owner Appreciation Days 10% discount and get some of those great humanely and sustainably raised steaks for the grill. Our Niman Ranch Choice or Prime Cuts of beef are fantastic additions to your grilling night. That succulent Ribeye or the leaner New York Strip are classic grilling steaks.

The Hanger Steak is also amazing on the grill at the new lower price of $15.99/lb. We also have the Wheatsville Teriyaki Marinated Hanger Steak. The sweet and salty flavors of our very own teriyaki are great compliments to the silky texture and big beef flavor of the Hanger Steak would be fantastic with a nice salad. Use those garlic, ginger and soy flavors in the teriyaki for your dressing which will compliment the honey in our teriyaki.

Burgers are always a summertime staple. Here in Texas, it's more like a staple, staple. Wheatsville has great options for burgers. All of our beef grinds are taken exclusively from whole cuts of beef sirloin or brisket. The only exception is the Premium Burger Blend. This special blend of Hanger, Striploin, Ribeye, Flat Iron and Round makes a tender and full beef flavored burger.

Speaking of grills, summertime is a great opportunity for great big shrimps. Jumbo Texas Gulf 16-20 Shrimp are fantastic for the grill. Marinated on a Skewer or butterflied these Shrimp are always a treat. Par boiling for 30 seconds to a minute really loosens the shell and makes a tedious job incredibly easier. They don't exactly slide off, but it's getting pretty close.

In the freezer on Coop Deals, we have the Natural Sea Fish Sticks and Fish Filets  on sale for $5.29 reg. $6.58. OAD is a great time to stock up on these and other frozen favorites like Applegate Farms chicken nuggets, strips, and patties and Henry and Lisa's Gluten Free Fish Nuggets.

Keep an eye out for Housemade Wheatsville Sausages to be available pre packed in the self serve case. We already have four packs of Bratwurst conveniently ready to grab&go.

Austin Pets Alive!

Volunteers from Austin Pets Alive! at Wheatsville
Pia, Tina Fey and Mari

July's Community Action Group is Austin Pets Alive!.  This non-profit animal shelter, run almost exclusively by dedicated volunteers, focuses solely on the pets who have already been passed over by other groups and the shelters' adoption programs. Throughout the month, our deli is baking hand-decorated APA! paw print sugar cookies to raise awareness!

Adopting from APA! is the best way to help a pet find a permanent home, but if you are not ready for a lifelong commitment, APA! also offers a foster program.  Many of the pets in need of a foster home are young kittens and puppies who are not yet old enough to get spayed and neutered, older pets who are ill or injured and are on their way to recovery, and pets who need help transitioning from the stress of having been abandoned at a shelter.  Generally, fosters will keep animals an average of 2 weeks unless indicated otherwise. If you are interested in fostering a pet from APA! visit their website and fill out a Foster Application.

Austin Pets Alive! will receive 1% of the co-op's Wednesday sales in July and additional donations that shoppers make at the register. Feel free to donate your reusable bag and container credits any day of the week. Donate $1 or more at the register and receive a free Austin Pets Alive! window decal, available while supplies last!

I hope you have a most excellent week!

Organic Vanilla Ice Cream, Organic Dutch Chocolate Ice Cream

Using only organic ingredients and no gums or artificial colorings, Straus Family Creamery's artisan ice cream harkens back to the old-fashioned ice cream of the past. Fresh cream and milk (from cows that graze the rolling hills of Northern California) come together with sugar and egg yolk, to make a super-premium ice cream containing 17% butterfat.
In 1941, William Straus founded a dairy with 23 cows named after friends and relatives. In 1994, his son, Albert Straus transitioned the dairy to organic--making it the first organic dairy west of the Mississippi--and opened Straus Family Creamery. He did so to keep his family's farm in agriculture and continue to protect the land through sustainable farming practices. Straus Family Creamery makes a full line of dairy products with milk from his family's farm and from three other local family farms.

Straus Family Creamery strives consistently to provide the highest quality, best-tasting organic milk, yogurt, butter, ice cream, and sour cream made with minimal processing and wholesome ingredients. Straus Family Creamery makes business decisions considering environmental and ecological priorities, which support the philosophy of sustainable, organic family farming, for the health and well-being of the company, its farmers, employees and the community at large. 16oz, Reg. $4.39
