We want to be at y our holiday parties!

Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Thanks for making the Arts Festival a great success. HUGE thank you to Even coordinator and Arts Festival creator, Judith Craft! This event is practically a one-woman operation and Judith makes it  look easy and fun! Great job Judith! Thanks to our neighbors at Spider House, Eco-Clean, ILoveVideo and United States Art Authority and Toy Joy for their various important contributions to a successful festival! Thanks also to our staff for their hard work preparing for Arts Festival and then operating with hundreds of more people in and out over the weekend. I hope you have a chance to enjoy this terrific community event!

Reduce, Reuse, Precycle! This Saturday, learn about reducing and re-using resources by pre-cycling and get tips on shopping in bulk! New Dishes for the Holiday Season from your Wheatsville Deli!

Our Fresh in the Deli recipes for December are divine! From the great cooks at Hunger Mountain Co-op in Montpelier, Vermont, we have the absolutely gorgeous Honey-Roasted Gorgonzola-Stuffed Organic Pears! Ripe, organic Bosc pears are roasted with a drizzle of local Goodflow honey and butter, and then stuffed with real Gorgonzola blue cheese, sprinkled with sea salt, black pepper and fresh thyme, and warmed through once more just to soften the cheese. With such few, wholesome ingredients, this fruity delicacy can certainly be served as a dessert, but would also work as a fancy side to a plate of pork chops or sliced over a green salad.

And from the Whole Foods Co-op in Duluth, Minnesota comes Tuscan Cream Cheese! Some Wheatsville old-timers may remember this savory cream cheese spread from a few years back when we made it regularly! Blending together rich Boar's Head cream cheese with black olives, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh garlic, green onions, fresh parsley and sea salt, this spread is chockfull of tasty bits and is amazing spread on crackers or your favorite RockStar Bagel!

And get ready for our holiday food – including your favorites like Vegan Cornbread Stuffing, Mushroom GravyGarlic Chive Cheddar Cheese Balls and an assortment of pies and cakes – to reappear in the coming weeks as we get closer to Christmas!

Come in and get your fix of our award-winning vegan Tempeh Chilispooned over Fritos and topped, if you so choose, with cheese, onions and jalapenos at our Deli Counter!

Our house-brewed, staff favorite Gingerade is our last Owner Special, 16 oz for just 99¢, reg. $1.69. This incredibly refreshing drink is made with fresh ginger, spices and a blend of three fruit juices, and can be served iced or HOT! If you've only had it cold, it's time to try it heated up! It's an allergy-destroyer and tummy-tenderizer all in one, and boy does it taste good too!

December's Salsa of the Month is the Roasted Tomato Salsa! Oven-roasting adds sweetness to vine-ripened tomatoes and onions, and smokiness to jalapenos – when hand-blended with some fresh cilantro and lemon juice, they create a very tasty salsa, for just $4.99/lb!

Green Grocer news!

We're highlighting Texas citrus this week in the produce department.  We grow a heck of a lot of citrus here, and we're proud to bring it to you at the co-op.   Come by and try a sample!

Organic Texas Navel – mild, sweet and with very little pulp, they're great for juicing.

Organic Bower Tangerine – sweet, flavorful, a bit tangy

Organic Rio Star Grapefruit– acid levels have lowered substantially since their entrance on the scene, juicy, sweet and getting sweeter.

Organic Bosc Pears are our favorite seasonal item this week.  With dense, firm and crisp flesh, the bosc is the first chioce for poaching, roasting, or baking.  Bosc pears go great with cheeses, fresh or cooked.  Check out the deli's offering of honey roasted bosc pear with gorgonzola cheese.  We'll have recipes posted for you to try at home.  They're great eating out of hand, too!  Their firmer flesh and sturdy skin makes them the ideal lunchbox pear.

Sale items this week:

Organic Garnet sweet potatoes have a moist, orange-yellow flesh and are what most people think of when you say "yam" (they're not true yams – those are an African root vegetable rarely seen inside the US, but that's a different can of worms altogether).  They're great fried like French fries, steamed, sautéed, boiled, stir fried, or in my favorite incarnation – sweet potato pie!  Come get some for the tasty price of 99¢ per pound!

Organic Blueberries are grown in the southern hemisphere from October to March, and they're in the peak of their season right now.  So sweet and delicious! –$4.49 each

Organic Daisy tangerines are my favorite of the tangerines we're stocking right now.  They do have seeds, but if you can deal with that, you've got a sweet, juicy, delicious organic tangerine at only- $1.69 per pound
