Introducing:  Field Day® , amazing foods at amazing prices

by Niki Nash, Wheatsville Merchandising Manager

I'm happy to present a new brand of foods and paper products at Wheatsville called Field Day® . Field Day® foods and paper goods are always natural, often organic and never use artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. The brand is committed to avoiding GMOs and many of the foods are gluten-free, kosher or both. Spanning the aisles with staples such as Mediterranean Sea Salt and fresh jars of Salsa, Organic Canned Beans and Vegetables, Organic Salad Dressings and Pasta Sauce and an amazingly delicious Organic Apple Juice, Field Day® foods can fill your pantry with great-tasting essentials for you and your family. Additionally, Field Day® paper products are 100% recycled, including Paper Towels, Bath Tissue, Facial Tissue and Napkins.

All of these attributes are noteworthy but the absolute best feature of Field Day® products are the prices. Co-ops , like Wheatsville, across the country are enthusiastically embracing the opportunity to offer co-op shoppers nicely priced natural and organic items in these times when money can be tight. You don't have to be wealthy to eat healthy, so stock up on these amazing new products and enjoy the savings!

Pesto, Greenburgers and Corn Cakes, oh my!

Pesto is in the house! That's right, our local suppliers, P/2 Pesto, have shut their doors for retirement and passed along their beloved recipes to us! We are now making their Basil Pesto and Vegan Basil Pesto and they are available in the Deli's self service case (no longer on Cheese Island)! Spread some on toasted slices of Roasted Garlic bread for a summery appetizer, or toss with freshly cooked, hot pasta for an instant dinner! One container of pesto is enough to dress a pound of pasta and it only costs $6.99.

Liked our Zucchini Falafel? Then you'll love our brand new vegan Greenburgers! We use the same great ingredients like fresh zucchini, chickpeas, fresh herbs and spices, and fry it up to get the same crispy, crunchy outside and tender middle, but now it's in a more sandwich-friendly format! We've been looking for a solid vegan burger recipe for a long time now, and are delighted to present our Greenburgers as an incredibly tasty and affordable new item! Greenburgers are available in the Deli full service case for $2.49 each as a patty, or $4.99 as a sandwich!

One of our most popular new Deli recipes is our featured August Fresh in the Deli recipe from Briar Patch Community Market in beautiful Grass Valley, California: Quinoa Polenta Corn Cakes with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce! Combining quinoa, polenta, roasted corn and red peppers, these little cakes are chockfull of goodness, gluten-free, and go for just $1.99 each with a side of smoky red sauce! We are selling tons of these tasty little treasures!

Our other Fresh in the Deli recipe is from the Wild Oats Cooperative in Williamstown, Massachusetts: the colorful Balsamic Summer Potato Salad at $5.99/lb! This picnic-perfect side tosses sliced Yukon Gold potatoes with balsamic vinegar, caramelized onions, sundried tomatoes and fresh basil! It's vegan-friendly and the lack of mayo is great for toting some along on a hot day with no fear!

Beat the heat with our Strawberry Daiquiri Smoothie, for just $3.99 each, as this month's special blends strawberries and lime juice for a creamy, cold treat! Or, if you're in need of a caffeinated wake-up call, Wheatsville's home-brewed Iced Coffee Toddy will fit the bill nicely, $1.99 each. August's salsa of the month, the brown sugar and ginger-spiked Roasted Pineapple Salsa, $7.99/lb, not only tastes great over a black bean taco, but works as a delicious chutney for fish and pork entrees – luau anyone?!

Speaking of ginger, have you tried our brand new super fantastic staff favorite Gingerade?! Nicknamed "Sunshine in a Glass" by our Counter Manager Mariah, this refreshing drink is made with fresh ginger and a blend of three juices, just $1.69 each.

And Sunday Brunch hot bar has been a blast, so look for that again this Sunday!

Looking for a deal? August Owner Specials are also ready for you in the Deli! Blueberry or Raspberry Smoothies are on sale, $4.49, reg $4.99! Also, you can get an Applegate Farms Roasted Chicken sandwich for just $5.99, reg. $6.99! And our best-selling Ginger Tempeh Pasta Salad is also on sale for $7.99/lb, reg. $8.49/lb!

Also on sale at the Deli Counter are tasty cold cuts: Boar's Head Oven Roasted Chicken at $8.99/lb, reg. $9.49 and Provolone Cheese, $4.99/lb, reg. $5.99!

Come on in and find something you love!

Help the clean-up with beer!

Abita SOS A Charitable Pilsner ! Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established 'SOS – A Charitable Fund' that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.
The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.

NEW Organic Texas Milk!

New to the dairy case is milk from Texas Daily Harvest. It's pasteurized (by law), but it's not homogenized, so the cream floats to the top and you have to shake the container each time before you pour it. The dairy in Yantis is also certified organic.

The milk has such a rich, vivid, nutty taste - and a finish! A surprisingly long finish. I mean, we're talking milk, here. It's not quite like raw, but it is like Technicolor next to black-and-white compared to what is usually offered at other grocery stores.

Bulk Herbs = Good Economics!

Bulk herbs are a great way to buy exactly what you need for cooking.  It is often more economical to buy cooking spices, exotic teas, and anything else you want to try without making a commitment to an entire bottle.  Most bottled spices cost from $3-6 dollars each and can lose their potency before youcan use them up, if you're anything like me.

Buying in bulk allows me to buy exactly the amount I need for what I'm cooking in the kitchen this week.  Wheatsville has a great assortment of spices and teas to meet all your needs, and we have recently moved our bulk herbs to a more convenient location in our lovely Bulk department.  We are always happy to answer questions about the bulk spices and teas we have, and place special orders for anything we don't. Stop by the Health Team desk, and let us help with any questions you have.

Simple storage- you can recycle your spice jars, or buy some of our small glass bottles to keep your spices in.  Spices do best if they are stored in a cool, dark drawer, or cupboard.

Here are just a few of the options we carry:

Baking Powder $ 3.89 lb, .24 cents an ounce

Baking Soda $ 3.49 lb, .22 cents an ounce

Sweet Basil $ 19.29 lb, 1.21 an ounce

Cocoa Powder $ 11.59 lb, .72 cents an ounce

Curry Powder $ 14.59 lb, .91 cents an ounce

Dill Weed $ 24.99 lb, 1.56 an ounce

Onion Powder $ 11.89 lb, .74 an ounce

Paprika $ 14.29 lb, .89 an ounce

Parsley $ 20.89 lb, 1.31 an ounce

Coarse Black Pepper $ 15.89 lb, .99 an ounce

Bacon!!

Need a quick easy snack? Enter the humble B.L.T. One of the easiest & tastiest snacks anyone could ever want. Simple to make and affordable to boot! Let's break it down:

The B: Bacon or "pork candy" to some. Wheatsville has plenty to choose from. Niman uncured smoked bacon $7.99/lb has a nice thicker cut than others. It cooks great with no shrink. Applegate provides us the best variety. We have Organic Uncured Bacon $7.99/lb, Uncured Bacon $5.39/lb, and Turkey Bacon $5.39/lb. Applegate Farms bacons are thinner sliced and are best if you love crispy bacon. And our most popular is also most affordable. Boar's Head Bacon in 1/2 lb package $2.99. Great when you only need a little. We even sell vegetarian and meatless options. No matter what you choose it's going to be great. Why? Cause it's bacon!!

The L and the T are vital too:

Many choices for your lettuce from green leaf to butter leaf (my personal favorite). Tomato choices are still abundant, though it is the last part of the season. Best bet is to choose local ingredients all the way.

Bread is important too. Really, it makes the sandwich. Sliced bread works great, and we have many choices. Everything from gluten-free to organic, and everything in between. But I personally love a great piece of artisan bread, like the great fresh-baked La Brea breads in the deli. Pain Rustique is a favorite of mine, as is the Roasted Garlic. Sliced thick, buttered and grilled. Boy, now that's the makings of an earth shattering BLT.

Check out the Rudi's Organic 100% Whole Wheat as well. It's on sale and it's delicious and hearty!

We have a new selection of Organic Prairie sliced lunchmeats. Being certified organic and certified humane treatment is a great way to start off the new school year, & guilt free, too! We have smoked chicken breast $6.99 6oz, roast beef $7.69 6oz, roasted turkey $7.59 6oz, smoked turkey $6.99 6oz, and smoked ham $6.99 6oz. Organic Prairie is great line of products that also use 50% less packaging material than most zip seal packages. Organic Prairie products are a cooperative group of farmers with a belief in sustainability and humane treatment. Also look for $1 off coupons for Organic Prairie products!

Specials for the month!

Natural sea cod filets and sticks $4.69 8oz, regular $6.59; Niman Ranch all natural pork tenderloins $13.99/lb in 2 piece cryovac, regular price $14.49/lb; Buddy's natural chicken bone-in split breast $5.29/lb, regular $5.49/lb (customer requested!).

Have a party on Cheese Island!

This month we have a few sales at Cheese Island. Our fresh Mozzarella is on sale for $7.49/ lb. regularly $9.99/lb.  We have introduced a product that we have carried, but in new packaging. Saint Andre Triple Cream Brie now comes in a 6 oz. size and an introductory price of $4.99 ea. It will retail for $6.99. Starting Friday the Smoked Goat Gouda will be put on sale for $8.39/lb, regularly $9.99/lb.

We will be having all store sampling days this weekend from 2 pm-6 pm.  Come see what we have to offer for back to school. Slice cheeses and slice meats, fruits, lunch boxes, water bottles and more.

I think we all deserve to have a party. Yes this weekend, let's see how many cheese parties we can all have. How about a local cheese themed party? Pure Luck's Ste Maure,  Veldhuizens  Red Neck Cheddar, Brazos Valley Brie, Served with Walnuts, figs, grapes and Goodflow Honey. Accompanied by A Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Real Ale's Oktoberfest.
