Back to School

Hello Wheatsville friends and fans!

Hard to believe that another school year is already upon us. U-Haul's are rolling in to town, kids are getting their Back to School shopping done and our aisles are full of great healthy foods for your lunchbox and quick easy meals to make nourishing dinners.

We know this time of year has people learning new routines, getting acquainted with new faces and learning new places. We are here to help you maintain your energy and your pantry. Look to our deli for easy take-home meals & sides, our grocery aisles for lunchbox favorites, our frozen section for healthy make-at-home meals and our nutrition department for energy and health support. If you need quick, tasty and healthy - we got that!

Community Action for the month of August

Wheatsville Food Coop is proud to support Hospice Austin as our Community Action donation recipient for the month of August. Hospice Austin provides family-centered, quality end-of-life care that emphasizes compassion, dignity, independence and respect.

Wheatsville Food Coop has committed to donating 1% of sales for the first four Wednesdays in August to support this vital service in our community. Customers may donate by shopping on Wednesday, giving donations of money at the register and/or by making food contributions to Hospice Austin’s food pantry by using the bins provided near the Hospitality Desk.

Please refer to their website, hospiceaustin.org for more information about their services, volunteer information and event news.

Lunch on the go!

Take advantage of the Texas Tax-Free Weekend holiday August 19, 20 & 21 and pick up your Back to School Laptop Lunch kit or a Stainless Steel Lunch Tiffin.

Laptop Lunches® are American-style bento boxes designed to help you pack nutritious, eco-friendly lunches. The lunch boxes are reusable, recyclable, and dishwasher safe. They also contain NO phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), or lead.

Our 2-Tier Stainless Steel Tiffin Set (a nifty lunch box system that hails from India) is reusable, lightweight, and has a lid that doubles as a plate. It’s easy to carry and clean, but hard to live without. Great for both cold or hot food, and the planet, too.

Tomato Goodness

Our featured seasonal produce item this week is the Organic Sungold Cherry Tomato. These things are so incredible, you will not believe your taste buds.  Sweet, fruity, and low in acidity, the Sungold will make anyone a believer.  At $2.99 per pound, they’re a great deal and are delicious rolled into a pita with some tabouli and bell pepper, in a pasta dish with herbs and chicken, or just eaten out of hand.

This summer has been tough on local farmers, so we’re glad to support them whenever we can.  Burnet’s Hairston Creek Farms grows some beautiful, delicious organic okra that you really must try.  Lots of people are afraid to cook okra.  Can’t get down with the slime? Fact of the matter is the slime is your friend!  The slimy, mucous-y substance (High in soluble fiber!  Hungry already, aren’t you?) given off by cooking okra is a great thickener for soups and stews, enchiladas, even lasagna!  Give it a try.

Okra shouldn’t be cooked too long.  Think of it like green beans or asparagus.  Fresh, lightly cooked asparagus is awesome.  Overcooked asparagus is awful.  Same with Okra.  If you’re still on the fence, pick up a packet of Aurora Creations’ Authentic Indian Spice Blends in the Asian foods section in aisle two.  There’s a package of Bhindi Masala spices (it’s the green one) that makes it so easy to create a delicious okra dish in under 15 minutes.  Add some hot rice or naan bread and a side of plain yogurt to round out your meal and you’re eating delicious, good-for-you, authentic Indian food with locally grown produce.

Eat well, be well!

Sushi’s Summertime Fruit Salad Wraps & More!

From vegan rolls, potstickers and spring rolls to a wide variety of fish sushi and wraps and even some alternate meat options, there’s something for everyone. Right now, Sushi’s hot new item is the Fruit Salad Wrap, a fresh, cold, wonderful summer spring roll! Light & tasty, these rice paper-wrapped rolls are filled with fresh salady goodness like spinach and avocado, PLUS an assortment of cut fresh fruit, including strawberries and mango! Depending on what’s in season and available, the fruits can change with the weather! With peanut sauce for dipping, these are a hit and sell out quickly – if you come in and don’t see them on the shelf, just ask one of our Deli staff for help and they should be able to have our Sushi folks make you one on the spot! Don’t forget to grab chopsticks on your way out!

Romano for you!

Have you heard? We have some new cheeses here at cheese island. Based on feedback from you we are now carrying a Pecorino Romano. Pecorino romano is a hard sheeps milk cheese that can be grated on top of pasta dishes or used as an ingredient in such cheesy dishes as Mac ‘n Cheese or potatoes au gratin. We are also carrying an Asiago. This cheese is a semi-hard, Italian cow’s milk cheese. It is made on the Italian side of the Alps and is similar to its Alpine cousins French Comte and Swiss Emental. Sweet and nutty in flavor, it can be sliced for sandwiches or eaten with crackers or crusty bread. You can grate it and use it for a topping for your baked potato.

Here is a wonderful article I read  recently. I want to share it with you http://www.culturecheesemag.com/autumn_plating_lunchbox

This week's One Big Thing

    WHEATSVILLE'S ONE BIG THING

Every week, Wheatsville staff picks the product we're most excited about right now! Stop by the deli to try (and buy!) this week's One Big Thing—Wheatsville's In-house Fresh-pulled MOZZARELLA!

What do we like about Wheatsville in-house pulled fresh mozzarella?

    1)    This fresh, milky mozzarella is pulled onsite here at Wheatsville from fresh mozzarella curds.

    2)    Try this amazing cheese for a special introductory price of just $9.99/lb!

    3)    Find it on Cheese Island next to the other fresh mozzarella cheeses.

We want to include our customers in the mozzarella pulling process, so we're having mozzarella pulling demos near Cheese Island twice a week. At NOON on WEDNESDAYS and SATURDAYS, you can see how fresh mozzarella is pulled, enjoy free samples, and learn about delicious serving suggestions.

Get the Most out of Owner Appreciation Days in Grocery!

Hey Owners!  It's almost Owner Appreciation Week and now is the time to pre-order cases of your favorite Grocery Items!  You may find yourself putting the same items in your shopping basket week after week, why not stock up by ordering a case? Or two!  All pre-orders get a 5% pre-order discountand when you combine that with the awesome sales we've got goin' on, as well as the 10% OwnerAppreciation Discount (applied at the register to the grand total of Your Big Shopping Trip), you've got yourself some pretty deep savings!  In addition to being a great value, pre-orders save the Coop a bit of time and labor dollars too- our stockers don't spend the time stocking something only to have the shelf emptied in mere seconds (but if that is what you want to do, by all means, come and get it!  That is what we're here for!).  And one of my favorite things about pre-orders is that when you come to pick up your pre-order, you simply have to ask for it at the Hospitality Desk and it will be brought up front for you in its original case, which is custom made for the product (if you have ever tried to pack 12 cans of beans into a bag, you'll know why this is wonderful!).  Pre-Order Away!

    Special specials for special shoppers!

We went above and beyond this Owner Appreciation by seeking out extra sales for all customers! With over 150 items on sale, not even including Co+op Deals or Owner Deals, the Grocery Team wants to help you save money while you stock up your pantry and fridge. Look for bright orange and bright yellow "Special"  & "Sale" signs throughout the store, with favorites including

LOCAL: Food for Lovers Vegan Queso $3.89 reg. $4.99, Nada Moo Coconut Frozen Dessert $3.99reg.$4.89, Hail Merry Raw Tarts and Macaroons $3.99 reg. $4.49

REFRESHING: Zico Coconut Water 11 oz size $1.49 reg. $1.89, 14 oz size $1.99 reg. $2.69, 33.8 oz size $4.49 reg $5.49, Blue Sky Soda 6-packs $2.99 reg $3.99 (excludes Organic and Sugar Free varieties) Guru Energy Drink $1.69 reg. $2.19

Also look for samples, product demonstrations and tastings throughout the entire week, so everyone feels appreciated!

Get your Caprese on starting in produce!

This week, we're featuring locally grown organic bunched basil from Buena Tierra Farms andlocally grown mixed medley cherry tomatoes from Oak Hill Farms to go along with the incredible hand-pulled mozzarella the cheese team is featuring this week.  If you haven't tried it, you'd better!  Fresh mozz is unlike anything you've had from a package.  Our basil and cherry tomatoes are great compliments and work well in a caprese salad or on bruscetta.  I like to marinate the cherry tomatoes overnight in a little apple cider vinegar with some fresh parsley, oregano and a pinch of salt.  Add a teaspoon or so of sugar if you like, and wham! Your taste buds won't know what hit them.

Another feast for the senses this week are our organic red cherries.  They're better than ever: crunchy, juicy, sweet, amazing!  Organic cherries are really a treat – the season is short but they are so worth it!

Storm Cheese Island for Bastille Day!

On Thursday July 14th, we will be celebrating Bastille Day by sampling out French and French style cheeses a long with some French wines.

This weekend is the beginning of Owner Appreciation days. We will be sampling throughout the week. So come and try some delicious food and save.

Last week we started our fresh mozzarella program. If did not get a chance to come by last week, we will be doing it all over again this week. Wednesday and Saturday, starting at noon.

    Grow it yourself!

Grow Fresh Oyster Mushrooms in your OWN Kitchen!

Our new Grow Your Own Mushroom Garden Kit $19.99 by Back to the Roots is, for a lack of better words, "SO COOL!" Small enough to fit on your window sill or kitchen counter, you can grow up to 1 ½  pounds of fresh oyster mushrooms in recycled coffee grounds – in as little as ten days! The kit is simple to follow and mess-free! All you have to do is:

    1)    Open the front panel of the box

    2)    Cut a slit in the soil bag

    3)    Mist with water (mister included) twice a day

… and watch your dinner grow!

You can even expect to have 2-4 harvests in the same box! Check out the Back to the Roots website for photos, recipes, and details about their product – and if you post a photo of you and your crop, they'll send you a free replacement bag or donate a kit to an elementary classroom of your choice! House-made sausage and Alaskan Sockeye Salmon!

From Red Sauce to Stroganoff, or link to burger, this sausage is versatile and delicious. Friday we will have our new Variety Packs on sale. This is a great time to try out our new Sausages and get a great deal on some of your favorites.

This period on Coop Deals is Applegate Farms Great Organic Hot Dog @$5.99 reg. $7.99. Look in the Freezer for a New Applegate Farms product, Chicken Hot Dogs.

Alaskan Sockeye season is still in full swing. Once a year we have the opportunity to get wild caught never been frozen super fresh Sockeye Salmon. I recommend strolling over to Breed and Co., picking up a couple different kinds of wood planks (I'm talking about the ones in the grilling section) and grilling that Sockeye atop some great wood flavor. Those planks would really help out with some of those fish fillets that don't have skin anymore like Halibut. Speaking of grilling fish, the Orca Bay Swordfish Steaks @$7.99 would be an excellent grill choice. Two to a package and individually packed, allows you to quickly thaw and use as few or as many at one time as you would like. The MSC certifiedsustainable Orca Bay products are all packaged this way and at really great prices.

Wine and Beer tastings! Two this week! And a super special Wine Deal!

Bastille Day wine tasting! Come celebrate Bastille Day at Wheatsville with a tasting of Le Grand Noir Wines tonight from 4:30 to 7:30. From a country renowned for its wine-making tradition, Le Grand Noir wines offer untraditional blends from traditional French varietals.

Organic beer Tasting! We are hosting a tasting featuring Butte Creek Organic IPA and Butte Creek Organic Pilsner this Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00. These are fantastic beers and they are on sale for just $8.99 regularly $9.99 so stock up!

Shane, our Wine Buyer, is putting together an amazing wine deal for Owner Appreciation Days. The Owner Appreciation Days Wine Buyer Pick Pack combines some of our favorite wines together in one of our Wheatsville 6 bottle bags for an incredible deal. The wines you'll find: Parducci Sustainable produced Pinot Noir, Coppola Rosso, 4 Vines Zinfandel, Callia Torrontes, Allia Alta Malbec, and Casal Garcia Vinho Verde. Combine the deal on the wine itself with the 10% off for buying six bottles at one time AND your 10% one time Owner Appreciation Days discount and that amounts to a whopping savings of $31.20! Holy smokes! This may be the most screaming-est wine deal in town!

New Gourmet Salts Available in Bulk Herbs!

Bulk herbs just got classier. We've brought in four new gourmet salts from local Southern Style Spices in Manor, Texas. Brittany Coast Grey Sea Salt, Course ($9.99lb/.62oz) is mild in flavor and high in minerals and nutrients. Hawaiian Red Sea Salt ($15.99lb/.99oz) gets its vibrant color from volcanic red clay and has a mellow earthy taste. Fleur De Sel ($25.59lb/$1.59oz) is a premium quality and hand harvested salt that gets its name from the subtle smell of violets that develops as it dries.French Red Sea Salt ($10.29lb/.64oz) has a flavor full and distinct taste that cannot be matched, and my favorite Chihuahua de Mexico Smoked Sea Salt ($19.99lb/$1.24oz) has a strong punchy smoked taste that complements fresh cheese and garden tomatoes. Here's how I used it in my new favorite snack:

    Smokey Summer H'ors deurves

4 Roma Tomatos Sliced into round chips

Wheatsville's in House Mozzarella sliced into 12-15 bite sized morsels

    Fresh Basil leaves

Bulk Chuihuahua de Mexico Smoked Sea Salt (to taste)

*Layer mozzarella and basil on the tomato chips and sprinkle with smoked salt for a quick, easy, Southwestern twist on the traditional tomato & basil appetizer!

    Stay cool friends!
