Here's the scoop… news from Bulk!

Casa Brasil will be here tomorrow 3/11/10 from 11am until 2pm offering free samples of their "Coffee 101" education roasts.  They will set up outside on the patio near the front entrance.  This is the first of 3 demos this month, the others will be on 3/21 and 2/28 from 1pm until they run out!

Produce bites
Citrus Wanes
This year's citrus season has been phenomenal. We're nearing the end, and still have some goodies to offer before the seasons roll over. Right now in produce we have organic blood oranges, organic minneola tangelos, bags of organic honey tangerines, organic rio star grapefruits, organic navel oranges, organic valencias, bags of organic texas valencias, and bags of clementines. My current favorites are the rio star grapefruits, the honey tangerines and blood oranges. Get'em while they last!

Greens!
We are getting some gorgeous Texas grown greens from Texas Naturals in Buda. We are currently offering organic collards, lacinato and green leaf kale! These are very tender, and delicious. See my article in the current issue of the Breeze for information about these delectable items.

Wheatgrass Returns
We have started to bring in flats of wheatgrass from the fine folks at New World Produce out near Lake Travis. The flats are pretty large and are $12.99 a piece.

Wholly Guacamole
For years we've been getting requests for packaged guacamole, and now we've got it! Three varieties in fact, spicy, pico de gallo style, and organic. These really are delicious, and taste just as fresh as fresh guacamole made at home. I know it sounds crazy, but it's true!!!

Cheese Island says Aloha
Good News! Pureluck Chevre is back on our shelves, the Del Cielo, Ste. Mare and the spreads will follow. A few sales for this coming week. Argentine Parmesan is on sale for 6.99/ lb, usually 8.99/lb.  Also, the Smoked Goat Gouda is on sale for 8.29/lb, usually 9.99/lb. I will be ordering the Daiya shreds on Wed. and they should be in on Fri.

I was looking down the wish list and I just want to comment on the items that were requested. So, as I was writing earlier, The Daiya shreds should be in on Fri. We did bring in the Woolwich Goat Brie and Goat Mozzarella.  Also, we are now carrying Full Quiver Plain Neufchatel and the Organic Valley Blue Cheese Crumbles and Cow's Milk Feta. I am waiting for the Veldhuizen Bleucheese to finish aging. And I am currently trying to find a source for Vegan Parmesan. The Lifeline Cheddar is now packaged as Mild Print Cheddar. It is the same cheese.

Bad News- Sorry folks!!! We have some sad news about P/2 Organics.  They lost their basil crop and are unable to make their basil pestos.  They are still making the rest of their line, which includes Alfredo Sauce, Spinach Pesto, and Cilabtro Pesto.  We are expecting to have their products back in stock in April.

From Wheatsville owner Booka Michael's Rancho Pancho in Hunt, Texas, 100% All Natural shelled pecans conveniently packaged in a "generous" one pound bag. They are by the front door in the produce department next to the bagged apples (just add cinnamon for baked apple with bits of pecan!)

Beer Ranger!
Since its recent debut New Belgium's Ranger I.P.A. has become one of the top selling beers at Wheatsville and for good reason.  New Belgium's foray into the true American India Pale Ales brings out the hops in a big way! This clear amber beauty bursts with an abundance of hops: Cascade (citrus), Chinook (floral/citrus), and Simcoe (fruity) lead off the beer, with Cascade added again for an intense dry hop flavor. Brewed with pale and dark caramel malts that harmonize the hop flavor from start to finish. Ranger comes in both six packs and  singles.

By Owner Request-Niki Nash Grocery Merchandising Manager

This week, I'm going to highlight a few...unusual items (all happen to be some sort of paste!) that have been coming up on the "Wheatsville Wishlist" time and time again and I am happy to tell you they are now gracing the shelves with their pasty presence:

Marmite! This controversial little jar of yeast spread seems to inspire intense love or intense hatred...cast your vote http://www.marmite.com

Crown Prince Anchovy Paste! Ready to use in sauces, salad dressings, pizzas and savory butters. Wild caught anchovies are cured, processed into a paste and packaged in easy to use tubes.

Nutella! This creamy, delicious, sinful hazelnut spread has been highly requested but unavailable from our distributor. The fates have smiled upon us and now we have it! YUM

Unfortunately (and I have no idea why) we are unable to get Tamarind paste from any of our distributors. It now moves up to the esteemed spot of 'most requested' and by golly I will get it in here one day!

In The Grocery Aisle

New Austin Spice Habanero Hot Sauces:
There's a new way to burn your mouth at Wheatsville. We've got the new "Habanero Sunburn Hot Sauce" and "Southern Sunrise Habanero Hot Sauce" from Austin Spice Company. I like hot sauce to be hot, but still have good flavor. These two new sauces didn't let me down. The Southern Sunrise has a bite to it with a strong, peppery flavor while the Habanero Sunburn is a little hotter and adds the unique flavor of papaya. If you're looking for a way to warm up, try adding some Austin Spice. http://www.austinspice.com/ Justin Merrifield, Grocery Buyer

Cheese Island News!
Just a heads up, our distributor for Daiya cheese is out of stock. They are not expecting another shipment in until the end of March. It seems it is very, very popular. I will keep ordering in the hope of their shipment arriving sooner than expected. The Cheese department does have two new products that I want to introduce you to. One is Woolwich goat brie. It comes in 6.5 oz wheels and they sell for $7.99 each. Also we have Woolwich goat Mozzarella which will sell for $4.99 for a 7 oz block.

Rerigerated Item of the week!
Almond Breeze is now available in the Refrigerated Department!  A 64 oz carton is just $4.59.  We have Original, Vanilla, and Unsweetened Vanilla.  This delicious non-dairy beverage has a  creamy, smooth texture with a light almond taste.  Almond Breeze is lactose, gluten and cholesterol free.  It is also  a good source of Vitamins A, D, E and calcium.  I've seen these items on the wishlist a few times and your wishes are granted!  Enjoy!  I know I will.

Try this recipe:

Olive Oil Poached Halibut

1 pound halibut fillet, cut into 1 1/4-inch cubes

1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt, more to taste

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, more to taste

4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

1 small rosemary sprig

1/2 teaspoon dried mint

2 garlic cloves, minced

Fresh lemon juice, to taste (optional)

Chopped fresh mint, for garnish.

1. Season halibut all over with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. In a medium-size skillet just large enough to hold fish cubes in a single layer, heat oil over low heat. Add fish, rosemary sprig and dried mint, and let cook slowly until fish begins to turn opaque, about 3 minutes.

2. Stir in garlic and 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper, and cook until garlic is fragrant and fish is just cooked through, another 3 minutes or so (heat should be low enough so as not to brown the garlic or fish but high enough to gently cook everything; the cooking time will vary widely with your stove).

3. Taste and add more salt and pepper and a few drops of lemon juice if desired. Stir in the fresh mint and serve, using a slotted spoon if you want to leave the poaching oil in pan; it is delicious over couscous or potatoes.

Yield: 2 servings.

Have a great week!

Some GOOD NEWS!
Bob's Red Mill gets new owners!
Our friend Bob of Bob's Red Mill has finalized the conversion of his company to an employee-owned one! I was really impressed with their operation when I visited a few years ago and am even MORE excited about this awesome company now that it's employee-owned! See the story here.

Cows get put out to pasture (in a good way).
There has been a lot of controversy over Organic milk pasture standards over the past few years and we weren't sure how the new standards would actually play out, but I am glad to announce GOOD NEWS in this area! Specifically, the new rules require that dairy cows and other ruminants be out on pasture for the entire growing season, but for not less than 120 days. It also requires that the animals receive at least 30% of their feed, or dry matter intake (DMI), from pasturing. In addition, organic livestock will be required to have access to the outdoors year-round with the exception of temporary confinement due to mitigating and documentable environmental or health considerations.

You can read a press release from a, organics watchdog group called the Cornucopia Institute's take on it here.

This isn't your Grandma's Boxed Wine!
Wine bottles cost a fortune to make,  they're heavy, fragile, and there odd shape makes shipping them is incredibly inefficient, especially in environmental terms. That's where Three Thieves Bandit box wines come in. The Bandit is the first breakout line of American boxed wines. Cheap and Earth-friendly packaging keep the price low, and superstar winemaker Joel Gott (a name you can trust on any bottle) keeps the juice delicious. Boxed wine packaging amounts to just 4% of its total weight, compared to 70% for traditional bottles. That all adds up to a smaller carbon footprint. Better yet the wines are great and because they are cheaper to ship they are a better deal, $9.99  for  one and a third of what you would get from a regular bottle of wine. We have four flavors from the winery, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Sangria. Try one today!

From the Deli

The weather's been changing faster than ever, so we've been staying prepared to keep you warmed up and nourished during these cold mornings, and cooled off and refreshed in the sunny afternoons! From hot soups and chili to cold salads and smoothies, our meals run the gamut to fit your changing tastes!
February's salsa of the month – the newly revamped and better than ever Ancho Bomb – is a winner, with the smoky taste of ancho chiles melding with sweet roasted red bell peppers and fresh orange juice! It's a gorgeous sunset-red salsa that would be great spooned over simple chicken or fish, and tastes great with chips or over some rice and beans, too!
Our super-tasty smoothie of the month is Chocolate-Covered Strawberry, blending strawberries with cacao nibs, and a hint of vanilla! Triple yum, and all that frozen goodness for just $4.99!
Prefer something warm? Well you're in luck! Our famous Frito Pies, made with our vegan Tempeh Chili, are on Owner Special this month – at just $3.99 this is one of the cheapest and most filling meals around! Add some jalapenos for extra heat or some cheese if you're feeling the need!
Also on sale for owners in the Deli this month are both sizes of our organic, fair-trade and much-loved Latte! Sidle up to our Deli Counter's coffee bar and save 50 cents on this delicious drink! Need something to pair with your fabulous morning coffee? Well, our locally-made Sweetish Hill Cinnamon Rolls are also on Owner Special, and they are amazing! And amazingly huge! These tender, light rolls are swirled with cinnamon sugar for a just-sweet-enough chew and would most certainly hold up to repeated latte-dunking!
As if that's not enough, we also have Boar's Head Oven-Roasted Chicken and Boar's Head Provolone on sale this month, so stock up your fridge!

Are you a Flan Fan?
If you are, I've got fantastic news for you- we're now stocking Signature Flan, a rich, creamy dessert made in Bedford, Texas!  Packaged in single serving sized containers, these flans are the perfect quick dessert, made with simple, recognizable ingredients.  Just slide a butter knife around the outside edge, put a bowl face down over the top and flip it over.  Or, you could just do what I do and eat the flan first and save the delicious caramelized sugar for the last bites.  Awesome!  We currently offer Coffee and Cinnamon flavors (Vanilla is coming soon!), each 4.5 oz container is $2.99.

Field Roast Grain Meat Sausages!
Have you tried the Field Roast sausage yet? It really is an incredible vegan artisan sausage made out of "grain meat". Check out their bog post about making it here.

The land of Produce!
Late Season Citrus
I hope everyone has been taking advantage of what has been a great citrus season so far this year. Right now we have amazingly juicy and sweet royal mandarins and honey (murcott) tangerines. Also, the cara cara pink navel oranges have been customer and staff favorites, these have a delicious flavor and look great in salads. Also in stock are organic Rio Star grapefruit, organic navel organges, Texas Valencia oranges (loose and in bags for juicing), organic minneola tangelos, organic meyer lemons, organic lemons, and key limes. Citrus season will only be continuing for a few more weeks, so eat them while we got'em.
