Now is the time for fresh produce!

The summer fruit is really starting to come into season! Enjoy the best fruit season with
Cherries
Peaches from the Hill Country
Nectarines
Apricots
Blueberries

Wow! Drooling now!

A note about our stone fruit (Peaches, nectarines, plums, etc.)- we believe that these are best when ripe. We also believe that refrigerating them before they are ripe can make them mealy. We are against mealy stone fruit. So, we don't refrigerate ours. This means that our stone fruit will be ripe (or will ripen nicely in a paper bag) and be very delicious for you, the eater. However, this means that our fruit can be a little more delicate than the rock hard cold fruit at other grocers. So, handle with care, buy what you can eat in a day or two and come back for more! (Use a bib when eating the really ripe ones!)

If you find stone fruit that isn't ripe yet, the best way to ripen them is in a paper bag for a day or two at room temperature. Remember to check on them often. They can go from delicious to decomposed fairly quickly in our warm weather! (Did I mention wearing a bib?)

Thanks for all the nice e-mails last week replying to my !Peach Alert! It was great to hear from so many of you Peach Enthusiasts. (If you are not a peach enthusiast, it's probably because you ate one that wasn't ripe or that had been refrigerated and was mealy. Try one of our ripe ones and you may find yourself converted!)

The Farm Tour at Tecolote Farms is CANCELLED!

We're really sad, but we totally understand that the Tecolote folks are having some difficult times at the moment and instead of being fun, would just be a big extra burden right now. Katie and family have promised to reschedule with us, so we will do that, probably in the early Fall. You can read more about their travails including some action steps you can take to try and improve the water situation for farmers at http://wheatsville.coop/

Help out our friends at Hairston Creek Farm!

Carol Ann of Boggy Creek Farm writes so nicely and has included this about the challenges facing our friends at Hairston Creek Farms and something that you can do about it!

"The community comes together in trying times, and now -- especially now -- a certain farm family needs its friends, its customers, and those who care about the local food supply to rally around. Sarah Rowland, co-farmer of Hairston Creek Organic Farm near Burnet has been diagnosed with an extremely aggressive cancer. Although the family has insurance, we all know that, in the details, a policy is never sufficient. And, when facing possibly the greatest calamity one can face, emotional support, as well as financial help, is surely needed.

Thus, in an age-old tradition, we are joining together to aid the Rowlands with both love, and financial support. Sarah and Gary Rowland are pioneers in the local food movement, beginning their farm in 1990. For all these years, they have grown nutritious food, with integrity and dedication, and provided it to consumers in the Austin area as well as in Burnet County. Sarah is a pillar in the Sunset Valley Farmers Market, helping to guide it to success with direction and faithful attendance for many years.

A fundraiser is planned for May 29, Thursday at 7 PM, at the sublimely beautiful Barr Mansion's Artisan Ballroom http://www.barrmansion.com/contactus.html  (map). Chefs are always gracious at these times and many will prepare delicious tastings from food donated by area farmers, ranchers and producers. A silent auction will feature restaurant suppers, gift certificates, artisan crafts and works of art, etc. Suggested minimum donation at the door, or in advance at area farmers' markets and at BCF, is $20. Greater generosity is of course encouraged. For more information and to make donations via credit cards, visit http://www.rowland.austinfarm.org/. To send checks directly to the Rowlands, their address is
Hairston Creek Farm,  4300 Co Road 335, Burnet, Texas 78611.... Thank you in advance."

Expansion Update
Not much to report this week. Things are moving right along as planned. Hopefully, you haven't been inconvenienced much or at all yet.

Wheatsville friend and fan (and Owner!) Suzanne Batchelor e-mailed me this week:
"On construction shopping hints -- shopping at night, when you drive a car, is better.  Plus, I saved gas going and coming in sparser traffic.

And shopping on a bicycle anytime, of course!  For that, I use soft-sided coolers ('6-pack' size and larger) for frozen items. They fit in bike baskets or backpacks, and the frozen items get home just fine.  On a long trip, put a plastic bottle half-filled with water in the freezer ahead of time--that's your 'ice' to keep things cool longer.

And, on a bicycle, you make your own breeze!"

Great suggestions, Suzanne! Thanks! Do you have ideas to share? Let me know and I'll include them in future posts!

More fun than an aisle full of monks!
We were very pleased to have a vist from the Tibetan monks of the Gaden Shartse Monastery from India. They came and did a 30 minute blessing of Wheatsville and our expansion project. They did some chanting and some bell ringing and it was very moving and interesting. The sat in aisle 3, the center of the store and did their great ceremony. You can see pictures at http://wheatsville.coop/monksblessing.html We were greatly honored that they could spend time with us and bless our project and co-op with their warmth.

You're invited (as always!)
The next Wheatsville board meeting is Tuesday May 27th from 6-9pm at our temporary meeting space 406 West 30th Street (30th & Fruth, across from Trudy's) The agenda is available on-line at http://wheatsville.coop/bodagenda.pdf
Coffee with the board is on for the first Saturday of each month on the patio. Visit with the board from 10-Noon and enjoy treats, chatting and transforming society!

I hope that you all have a great week!

MONKS VISIT
You have probably heard about the Tibetan Monks visiting from the Gaden Shartse Monastery. They've been around Austin for a few weeks. Well' I am excited to announce that they will be coming by Wheatsville next Tuesday May 20th at 2pm for a blessing of the co-op and our expansion project. So, if you've been waiting for the perfect event to say hello to these fine folks from Tibet, now is your chance! We'll be making a financial offering to them that they will use for the New Gaden Shartse Charitable Hospital,
which officially opened February 1, 2007. This new facility is located within Camp #1 of the Tibetan Settlement in Mundgod, Karnataka, India.
The Shartse Hospital has opened to serve anyone in the region, monks, nuns, and lay people, both Tibetan and Indian.
Many monks, nuns and lay people are currently in desperate need of medical and dental care. Illnesses, such as tuberculosis and diabetes, also need to be treated. We are happyo to have them come and bless Wheatsville and to offer aid to this worthy cause.

FARM TOUR
Wheatsville owners and organic farmers, Katie Kraemer and David Pitre invite Wheatsville owners to visit their farm.

Tecolote Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm in operation since 1994. Sundays are harvest days. They harvest for Monday basket deliveries in the morning, then clean, sort, and pack vegetables in the shady wash area after lunch.
Coop members are welcome to join the Wheatsville tour and should bring wide-brimmed hats, closed shoes, and water. Please leave your pups at home.
We've got about a dozen folks signed up already, so get on board and check out one of our favorite local farmers in their natural habitat!

Fresh in the Deli!
The Deli case is overflowing with delicious treats! Depending on which day of the week you come into the store, you may be tantalized by the spicy bite of Rainbow Chard Enchiladas, sweet and filling Stuffed Red Bell Peppers, blue cheese and hazelnut-studded Lamb Meatballs from local Loncitos lamb, or mango-laden Curry Lime Chicken Salad. Our May salsa of the month, Tomatillo Fire is in stock and topping many Deli tacos, and our bakery cases are packed with delectable treats like the sweetly dark Chocolate Espresso Cake. Don't forget that our black, green and hibiscus mint iced teas are on sale this month with member coupons to help keep you cool!

Popcorn Tofu Po'Boy's are always a great choice for lunch.  A fresh baked hoagie filled with popcorn tofu, your choice of veggies and our own yummy Cashew Tamari dressing.

Graduation is up and coming for our local scholars.  Check out our catering trays for your parties.  We have Crudite Trays, Meat & cheeses, Medittereanean, plus Fruit & cheese trays.  All of these can be ordered with 2 days notice from the Deli.  Or you can make your own spread – walnut pecan pate, hempseed hummus, & baba ganouj.  Give us a call and we will help make your graduation party as stress free as possible.

In the meat department
Check out our Buddy's Natural boneless, skinless chicken thighs on sale!!!!!  Regularly priced $4.39lb, on sale for $3.99lb.  These are great for fajitas served with grilled onions & peppers.  Also, a great addition to soup, due to its great flavor.

BIKE TO WORK DAY!
Bike to Work Day is this Friday, the 16th.  Wheatsville will be one of the many pitstops for your biking pleasure.  We will be setup on our patio from 7am-9am, offering an assortment of bagels, cream cheese, juice, coffee, and fruit.  Swing by and visit us on your bike during this time, we would love to be a part of a great start for your day.

Owner suggestion for other owners!

I had an owner named Chris come in the other day and tell me that she was going to try and bus to Wheatsville more due to some of the parking challenges and her solution to make it easier is a foldable grocery cart. She's going to get one and suggested that people consider getting them, too. She said that it's what people in real cities do and was excited to be getting one. You can get one here:

Cool New Wheatsville Merchandise!!!

There is lots of exciting new Wheatsville merchandise arriving this month!  Last week our new re-usable shopping bags came in.  They have our new Texas logo on them, and are only $1.99.  We also received our new heavy duty Recycled Cotton Wheatsville bags and they are awesome!

I am really excited about our new Wheatsville Travel Mugs.  Made from 100% US grown resources such as soy proteins, potatoes starches, corn, wheat, tapioca or beets!
They are nice heavy duty mugs, and they come in blue and green for only $9.99!

How about refillable bottles from Wheatsville and the Austin Farmers Market? You can bring these bottles to the Farmers Market in the Triangle on Wednesdays or downtown on Saturdays and get them refilled with Reverse Osomosis water for free! Wow!

For all of you with little Wheatsville Co-opers, in the next week or two we will finally have Infant and Toddler T-shirts with our new logos on them.  I was very excited to find some Organic Cotton Infant Onesies as well.

Expansion Update

Things are proceeding smoothly.I'll continue to thank you for your patience so far during the project. I'd like to remind you that you will find it easier to park early in the morning before 11am and after 8pm. We have more parking available behind the store after 5pm during the week and all day on the weekends. One other piece of advice, take the FIRST parking spot that you encounter when pulling into the parking lot. Don't drive around to see if there is a better one. I often see people pass up a spot or two immediately upon entering the lot and then not finding a spot on the other side. If you walk, ride your bike or bus, you should have easy sailing still!

I hope that you have a great week!

Mother's Day

Hi folks!

This week, we'll talk about:

Our expansion project!
Mother's Day!
Local produce and Mushroom mania!
News from the Herb department!

We've had a pretty exciting week at Wheatsville! We had a nice groundbreaking ceremony last week and were on tv!
Board at the ground breaking:

We also had demolition work on one of our external storage buildings!
Red Door

They have also started work on the former InStep building, our new offices and meeting room space.

Next week will be more of the same. You can stay up to date on our project via these weekly e-mails or on the web-site at http://wheatsville.coop/expansion.html

Thank you for your patience so far during the project.

We love our Mothers

My mom is in town this week, so we are celebrating on Sunday with a picnic at Mayfield Park. We're going to pick up sandwiches and beverages to go from Wheatsville and head on over to that delightful park. You can do the same. (But you don't have to go to Mayfield Park, especially if you're afraid of peacocks for some reason... You can just choose your favorite park.)

Making Mom breakfast in bed can be pretty nice, even if it's just Nature's Path Toaster Pastries or Lifestream Waffles with Organic Maple Syrup. (Little kids can even handle making these!)

Mother's Day will be celebrated in the Deli this weekend with strawberry shortcake, fresh greens and lovely beet salads. Florentine meatballs, barbecued chicken and grilled ahi tuna are back in the deli case as well.

Wheat-free Wednesdays are still going strong in our bakery with a delicious assortment of baked goods – including our newest addition, delectable Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip cookies – come on in mid-week and try one!

Don't forget to ask for a sample of our exceptional Fresh in the Deli special recipes from the Community Co-op for May, packed with tangy Greek flavors!

Semi-Pedantic Produce Prose from our new produce manager, Johnny Livesay.

Wheatsville 's Produces Department Local Produce Selection

We're currently carrying a bountiful selection of local organic and conventional produce.
From the kind folk of Buena Tierra Farms of Fredonia, Texas we are presently offering organic loose beets, bunches of basil, yellow squash, and beautiful napa cabbage. We have gorgeous organic loose turnips from Morrison Organic Farms based out of Cleburne, Texas. Reliable Brand organic tomatoes from Cedar Park are looking great and are ready for slicing. The Rio Star organic grapefruit from South Texas are huge, sweet and delicious. We also are carrying some beautiful hydroponically grown Bibb lettuce from Amador Farms from down the road in Dripping Springs. This has been a customer favorite for the past few months around here. The kids from the Eastside continue to deliver amazing looking, and tasting, pesticide-free collard greens through the Urban Roots program. Check them out on the web: http://www.youthlaunch.org/programs/seeds.php

Organic Mushrooms are in!

We have expanded our fresh organic mushroom selection this week. We currently are offering seven varieties of organic mushrooms! Look for packs of Portabella Caps, Baby Bellas, Maitake (hen of the woods), White Beech, Brown Beech, and King Trumpet mushrooms. All of these varieties are great for sautéing. We also have bulk organic Shitakes, which are great for stir-frys.

It's Asparagus season and I have a short video on Youtibe demonstrating how to prep your asparagus for maximum tenderness. (It is shot kind of poorly, but is still informative. (Or so I have heard...)
Herb department news from Health Team Clerk and Herb tender, Miranda!

Greetings from aisle 5!  I've added some exciting new items to our selection of bulk teas, herbs and spices.

We now have Organic Ground Chipotle, regularly $26.49/Lb, on sale for the month of May at $22.49/Lb.

I'm excited to bring in the Organic Chinese Five Spice Blend so many of y'all have requested.  This is a blend of organic cinnamon, fennel, cloves, star anise, and white pepper; perfect for stir-fry.  Regular price is $14.99/LB, on sale for the month of May at $12.99/LB.

I am also pleased to announce the return of our Organic Detox Tea from Starwest.  We were unable to get this blend of organic burdock, dandelion root, peppermint, red clover, licorice, yellowdock and ginger for a while, but it's back now at $14.99/LB.

Due to an ordering snafu I have some Conventional Nettles on my hands, and that means a great deal for you!  Get 'em while you can, $9.49/LB til they're gone.

The item I'm most stoked about?  Chia seeds!!  We've been carrying them for a while, but I recently moved these to a large jar on the bulk herbs counter to accommodate demand.  Growing sales have also allowed us to lower the price to $15.39/LB, $13.00/LB for special orders of one pound or more.

Have a great week!

Tecolote Farm Tour
Sunday, May 25th 11am - 2pm

Wheatsville owners and organic farmers, Katie Kraemer and David Pitre invite Wheatsville owners to visit their farm.

Tecolote Farm is a certified organic vegetable farm in operation since 1994. Sundays are harvest days. They harvest for Monday basket deliveries in the morning, then clean, sort, and pack vegetables in the shady wash area after lunch.

Expansion-asana: week 3!
The work continues on the retaining wall and some other stuff. We've got some video on-line of the back hoe doing some of its work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ5Jj4yItrk
Having a huge piece of power equipment in our parking lot has made parking  a little trickier than we're used to and we've had some traffic jams at certain times of the day. We appreciate your patience in this process. I do have some suggestions, though for better times to shop.
If you can adjust your shopping, you might find that the auto parking is easier during the the following times:
Early mornings from open until about 11 or 11:30am.
Mid-afternoon from 2:30-4
Evenings after 8pm.

After 5pm and on weekends, there is potentially parking to the north side of Wheatsville that you could also try.

All staff are parking off premises or finding alternative transport to get to work to free up as much space as possible for you to shop, but it will still be a squeeze during the busiest times. Once again, I thank you for your patience during our project.

We had a nice ceremony to celebrate the start or our project on Tuesday. We even got some news coverage. We'll post links to pictures and video as soon as we get them!

May specials and other product action!

We're heading quickly into May, so starting on Thursday, our new Co-op Advantage sales will begin! You can download the flyer on-line at http://wheatsville.coop/CAP%20flyers/SW04081.pdf

This week in the Beer department!
Samuel Smith ORGANIC Cider now available in the singles cooler!
Also, look for various singles on clearance sale at amazing prices (while supplies last)!

Fresh in the Deli
Say hello to Tomatillo Fire, Wheatsville's latest salsa of the month! Packed with roasted tomatillos, tomatoes, poblanos, onions, garlic, jalapenos and serranos, this complex salsa packs a sweet and spicy
punch.
The Deli's new smoothie of the month, Peach Cobbler will tame that heat with a cold and delicious cinnamon-laced blend of peaches and bananas. But, if you'd rather save that smoothie for dessert, our black,
green and hibiscus mint iced teas are in stock and on sale this month with member coupons to help keep you cool!

For the next two weeks, we'll be featuring these two recipes from the Community Food Co-op in Belligham, WA
Shepherd's salad, a light delicious salad featuring spelt berries, cranberries, feta and walnuts!
Cucumber Kalamata Salad, a great spring salad with the nice flavors of mint, feta, cucumbers, kalamata olives and cherry tomatoes.
Here's the latest from Mike Crissey in the Perishables Department:

SAVINGS ON TOP OF CREAM-ON-TOP YOGURTS

Brown Cow whole milk Yogurt Cups, the red tops, go on sale for 30 cents off (reg. $.99, sale $.69) starting Thursday for the entire month of May. This is my favorite yogurt because of the layer of sweet cream that sits on the top of the cup. Some people like to spoon the rich cream off the top, but I like to mix in it. Brown Cow is made with milk from Jersey cows, known for producing higher butterfat milk, which are not given artificial hormones. The yogurt is also naturally sweetened, has no artificial preservatives and has live cultures like the rest of the yogurt we sell here at the co-op.

THE DOG DAYS OF MAY

Fire up your barbeque! Lightlife Smart Dogs and Tofu Pups are going on sale to usher in the grilling season. Save 20 cents all month (reg. $3.49, sale $3.29). These veggie dogs are also ideal for a camping trip. They heat up in minutes in a pot of boiling water.

THE FREEZER'S FIRING UP YOUR SUMMER GET-TOGETHER

Burgers! Buffalo Wings! French Fries! The freezer is chocked full of savings on summertime fare. Almost every Boca product we carry is on sale in May. Boca Burgers and Meatless Ground Burger are $1.20 off (reg. $4.49, sale $3.29). Save $1.30 on Boca Chicken Patties, Spicy Chicken Patties, Buffalo Wings and Meatless Nuggets (reg. $4.59, sale  $3.29). Boca Italian Sausage and Bratwurst will be on sale for $3.49 (reg. $4.59).

Alexia Oven Crinkles are on sale for 70 cents off (reg. $2.69, sale $1.99), while Alexia Waffle Fries are $1 off (reg. $3.69, sale $2.69). Cascadian Farms Wedge Cut Fries, Hash Browns, French Fries, Spud Puppies and Country Potatoes are also on sale ($1.99, reg., $2.49 to $2.89).

And don't forget dessert. Pints of Stonyfield ice-cream and frozen yogurt will be 90 cents off for the month of May (reg. $3.89, sale $2.99).

THE NOMCOM WANTS YOU!!

Have you or someone you know wondered what more you could do for our cooperative? Then the Nominations Committee of the Wheatsville Board of Directors wants to talk to you. We have four general seats open in the upcoming September election. If you have a gold card (investment ownership) you are eligible to run for the board. Typically, directors spend an an average of one to three hours per week between board meetings and committees they may serve on. If you'd like more information, please contact the Nominations Committee atnominations@wheatsville.coop or contact board member Bob Kinney (bkinney@wheatsville.coop) or Mike Crissey (mcrissey@wheatsville.coop).

I hope that you enjoy this exquisite weather and have a great week!
