Last week's e-mail today!

I was away at a co-op conference in Pittsburgh last week and wasn't able to produce this e-mail, but there was some good stuff in it that I wanted you to see. Please forgive me, later this week when you get a rare second e-mail.

Yep, we're open from 7:30am to 11pm 7 days a week. THose of you that have somewhere to be by 8 or 9 am can still get to Wheatsville for coffee, breakfast tacos or to grab lunch for the day!

Come in this week between 7:30 and 8am for a free small drip coffee or before 9am to enter a raffle for a $100 gift card!

Parking and you!

Car parking is a lot trickier these days as we prepare the parking lot for new paving. Please follow the instructions of flaggers during the day to be safe. All traffic will flow one way around the building. You can see a graphic representation of this on our web-site www,wheatsville.coop scroll down for the plan.

Stone-Fruits

Yes! The day has arrived! The day I long for all season long: the day the white nectarine arrives. These are my personal favorite stone-fruits. They are better than a nectarine, YES! better than a nectarine! Our Texas peaches have been delectable this season. Also, if you haven't been seduced by the scent of white peaches, you may need to see a doctor!

Grillin'

If you're like most of us around the Co-op then you have been utilizing your outside cooking stations and not heating up your house with that meddlesome stove. Fortunately, vegetables like to be grilled too. Buena Tierra, our amazing local summertime producers, are really cranking out the grill-ables right now. Organic eggplant, golden zucchini, zucchini, yellow squash, green cabbage, and fennel all make for amazing sides or mains when slathered with some olive oil and lovingly graced with salt and pepper. Fire it up. Eat Local.

Our flame-grilled Greek Turkey Burgers and Middle Eastern Peace In The East Salad are two great dishes that go great together, plus they're our Fresh in the Deli recipe shares from other co-ops that will be in stock all week! I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. I shared my grilled peaches and brie idea, with him. He in turn shared a simple recipe with me. Take a fresh pineapple skin and core it. Cut it into rings and throw on the grill. As soon as the pineapple rings  start to soften top it with thin slices of Manchego. Remove when the manchego starts to melt. It can be served as an appetizer or desert. Enjoy!!

Coffee with the Board
This Saturday from 10am-Noon is our monthly Coffee with the Board. This month features our amazing Iced Coffee Toddy from the deli! Drink some coffee, eat some treats and talk to members of your board about the store, the weather, other co-op issues or the transformation of society. They love to see you, so come on out and hang under our nice new patio with them!

Parking Changes
We're finally at the stage of the project when we'll be regrading and paving the entire driveway. IN a few days, we'll have some drawings posted for you to see this all visually, but for now, allow me to explaing it in writing.
We'll do it in three main phases. The first phase happening now, won't affect you a whole lot. It removes the few spots on the eastern fence temporarily, but doesn't change the main parking and drive path that you have been used to during the project.
Phase two will close the half of the parking lot closest to the patio. You will continue to enter through our normal entrance and be able to park as younormally do on the south half of our lot. (You can also park in Supercuts' spots. They are not towing.) There will also be brand new parking in the northeastern corner of our property. Since the normal exit is blocked for paving, ALL traffic will flow ONE WAY around the new building on the east side, heading north and will exit from the north side of Wheatsville.
Phase three will close the normal entrance way and the parking closest to Supercuts.
Traffic will enter via our normal exit (near the patio) and find parking on their right as well as new additional parking on the east side of the building and in the northeast corner. ALL traffic will flow ONE WAY around the new building on the east side, heading north and will exit from the north side of Wheatsville.
Each of these phases will last about 21 days, so the schedule calls for this last phase to end in late July.

At that time, our new final parking will be in place and we will have about 50 spots!

I won't kid you, these next two months will have their parking challenges and trials. But, we never have less parking than we have had for the past few months, it will just be in a different configuration than we are used to.

Some things you can do to avoid the worst of the parking woes:
Shopping early or late can help. Since we will begin opening early at 7:30am on June 15th, that will give you an even earlier chance to beat the parking pain. We find that parking isn't bad before 10:30 or after 7.
Bike, walk or ride the bus. If you do any of these things, the parking will be no sweat for you.
Follow the flow. Our parking lot is at its worst when people try and "go rogue" and park in unmarked spots or try and swim upstream. Going with the flow and having as much patience as you can will help a lot!

I want to thank you for putting up with all the construction so far and for hoping that you will be able to hang in with us on this last challenging push! We need your business, so we hope you can put up with the parking trials for just a little while longer!

Feedback from last week's e-mail

It's really gratifying to know that so many of you read my weekly e-mails. I really appreciate it. I also love it when I get feedbacl and have a further chance to engage with you about the things you care about. Last week's e-mail announcing the end of the surcharge brought out a lot of responses which was exciting. The posiitve comments, which I wasn't necessarily expecting, far outweighed the disapointed or distressed ones. The margin was easily 5 to 1 in favor of positive. I'll share a few of the comments with you at the end of this e-mail just to give you a flavor... (Scroll on down to the end now if you just can't wait!) I am still eager to answer your questions or field your comments or concerns about this change. We have been thinking about it for years and thinking through the possible ramifications, so this was not a hasty decision, I promise!

Higher prices due to renovation?
One of the most surprising (and honestly baffling) types of comments we have been getting during the renovation have been the ones accusing us of raising our prices to "pay for the renovation". I just want to try and set the record straight and maybe begin to put an end to this erroneous impression.

We have not raised any prices at Wheatsville to pay for the renovation. We raise prices when a manufacturer or distributor raise their price to us and even then we sometimes hold the line on a price and "eat" the increase. We've done this quite a bit in the dairy department over the past year or more for example. We do need to make a certain margin on our total store in order to afford to stay in business and plan for the future, but the renovation was planned at our current levels of pricing, not with any additional price hikes internally.

All that being said, the renovation was paid for by YOU in very important ways. Your regular shopping support before and during the project has allowed us to put the necessary cash into the project. And, 165 of you invested over $700,000 which was the other crucial component that allowed us to get a bank loand from the National Co-op Bank. So, thank you all for the important part you played (and will play) in making this a succesful project!

One more thing, we know that the economy is taking its toll on people and we are working right now on improving the value proposition at Wheatsville. Please keep an eye out for even better Wheatsville values in the coming weeks and months.

Savor the Season: Stone-fruit! 
 
We like our stone-fruit around here. To some the arrival of Texas peaches marks the beginning of summer. I am one of those people. You may be, too. Despite a devastating late April freeze, we have been getting some phenomenal Texas peaches. In addition to these lovelies, we have been moving through some gorgeous and fragrant organic white peaches, succulent and sweet Organic Yellow Peaches, delicate and delicious Organic Apricots, and Ruby Reds and irresistible Organic Red Cherries. Organic Nectarines, and Organic Pluots arrived today! They are still a little hard, so I can't report on how they taste, but they look great. Come on in and grab (softly) some stone-fruit. This season is just getting started and I am looking forward to some tasty cobblers and pies!
 
Savor the Season: Melons!
Melons are another indicator that summer is upon us here in Texas. We have personal sized watermelons from Richardson, Texas. These are deep red, and super sweet. Pick up a few for only $2.99 each. Our other melons are really amazing as well. We have organic cantaloupes, organic galia (looks like a cantaloupe outside, looks likes a honeydew inside, tastes musky and delicious!), and organic honeydew! Get your fingers ready for some thumping and pick out some melons!
 
Organic Grapes!
We currently have organic red, green and black grapes. They are all seedless, sweet, and refreshing. I think you will enjoy them!
 
It's Easy to Go Local When You Go Co-op!
This is really the time of year for local produce here in Texas. Right now we have a great selection of local organic produce and local sustainable, transitional produce. From Green Gate Farms right here in Austin, we have gorgeous heirloom valley girl tomatoes. These are great for slicing or just eating out of hand. From our friends out in Fredonia, we offering organic zucchini, golden zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers (the best you'll see all year!), fennel, green and red cabbage, green bell peppers, basil and eggplant! Buena Tierra produces some of the finest quality produce available. We love them here! If you haven't tried their products you are missing out! This will be the last week we'll have the golden zucchini available, so if you are planning on grilling, or cooking for guests, get some of these gorgeous artisan gold zukes before they are gone. From Tecolote Farms we have organic bunch carrots. We also have round, golf-ball sized organic bunch carrots from Guinea Hill Farms out in Elgin. Texas blueberries from Nachodoches, and peaches from Cooper Farms in Fairfield, Texas. Eating local seasonal produce is a very easy way to shorten your food chain, and keep money in our community. Chopped, fresh vine-ripened tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions and parsley are tossed in a light lemon-soy yogurt dressing, creating a crunchy, refreshing side dish! We can hardly keep this one in stock!

Our salsa for June is Blackened Pepper Salsa, blending roasted jalapenos with salsa standards like ripe tomatoes, onions, garlic and lime to create a gorgeous and smoky orange salsa speckled with bits of green cilantro.

June's Smoothie of the Month is Strawberry Pineapple, sweet and simple, made with apple juice and frozen fruit, and never watered down with ice! Hey guys and gals! A new month means new price specials to pass on to you. To fully experience the greatness that is the summer grilling season you really need to throw a great big ole steak on the grill. We are going to help you with that. Perhaps the favorite of my @home chefs is the strip steak, which can be cut two ways. The most common cut of strip loin is the New York Strip. This steak is a large cut that can tame any hunger. Retail is $18.99 lb for this steak and this month owners get 35 cents off per pound. A second cut, which seems to be taking off, is the Petite Strip. This is a thicker but half cut strip steak. I am writing to let you know that I support your decision to do away with the surcharge.  In this economic climate, we need to do all we can to encourage people to shop at Wheatsville and join our Co-op.  I have belonged to Wheatsville for a million years (It was still on Lamar when I joined.) and I have always enjoyed shopping there.  When I moved away for a long time, I maintained my membership because I knew I would always move back to Austin.  We did in 2005 and I have been coming back to Wheatsville time after time.  Thanks for all you do for Wheatsville.

I wanted to let you know that I have no problems at all with eliminating the surcharge.  There is more to being a member of the co-op beside some cost savings, like, where else can you help decide what products your grocery store is going to carry on its shelves?  The more customers we have the better in my opinion, whether they are members or not.

I just wanted to let you know that i love it. i am glad you are no longer charging that. i am a member and a proud member. i absolutely love wheatsville. i love the idea of shopping at a coop. you carry everything (mostly) that i eat or need, plus some. i come here very often to pick up a little lunch since i work at UT. i have been shopping at wheatsville for 20+ years.
but i always felt bad about the 'are you a member' question for folks that weren't many didn't understand what it meant, maybe they just ran in to pick up some lunch or something. then it makes them feel odd. or 'not part of something' and that kind of feeling can make people not want to come back.
i think its fantastic. keep giving benefits for becoming a member - we will ever be grateful! i love wheatsville and am very excited about the expansion and all the new stuff going on. the cash registers pretty much rock too.

I think it's a great idea to let go of the surcharge.  We owner/members still have great benefits, and it does remove an obstacle for others shopping at Wheatsville.

You make a good argument for getting rid of the surcharge. I hadn't thought about it in quite a while; I guess it was started to raise money and as an incentive to join. It's great we can let that drop now!

And now for some of the comments from people that don't like the change:

I think that you missed the point entirely and that membership will drop off.
I agree with you that labeling it as a "surcharge" feels exclusionary.
But you could have continued with the exact same system, just tweaked differently: have the receipt for non-members show the "regular" price (possibly with the amount at the bottom that they could have saved if they were members), and have the members receipt show the "regular" price, but at the end subtract the discount that we receive for being member. The Weaver Street Co-op in NC does this, and it served as a very positive reinforcement to me that both the coop and I benefit from my shopping there.
Now I am faced with the idea that I am paying a membership fee just for 4 days of discounts a year, and frankly I don't know if it is worth it for that.

I certainly want to improve the experience at Wheatsville for non-members, and I think that the surcharge has always been a headache for those who are not members. however, I think that the elimination of the system of benefits for the investor-members is unfair. I suggest that the members be given a 5% or so 'credit on future purchases or a cumulative rebate based on purchases instead of only the 10% on one day opportunity. If Credit card companies can offer a rebate on purchases to card-hoders, and if it was reasonable and progressive to offer a 7% discount for membership-investment in the 0past at Wheatsville, then it would seem reasonable to offer the same rebate or one slightly modified to account for times of stress, to continuing members. One day a month and a few product-specific sales discounts does not seem to be enough incentive for membership and participation in the Co-op. Thanks for listening.

I don't remember the membership voting to get rid of the 7% surcharge sounds. This seems like a big step away from being a co-op. Why stop there? Why not give back our membership fees, get rid of the sale specials, stop the rebate program, and just let investor share-holders vote in elections? And while we're at it, let's change the name to Wheatsville Grocery. Sincerely, Randy

Changes I'd like you to know about and so much delicious food!

Register system and surcharge changes
We wrote a long article in the Breeze about changes that were coming to membership, but we inadvertently omitted possibly one of the biggest changes at Wheatsville. We have eliminated the 7% non-owner surcharge so that all of Austin can shop at our great regular prices. Don't worry, though, there are still many owner only special in the store and only owners can participate in our quarterly Member Appreciation 10% off days.

A little background... for years now, internally, we've been talking about getting rid of the surcharge. In fact, it's been part of our planning for the full 5 years that we've been working on this expansion project. The plan has been that we would end the surcharge when we completed the renovation, but decided to do it sooner when we started to plan the install of our new register system.

Why, you may ask are we doing this?

SImply put, the surcharge was a negative incentive to get people to join the co-op and we want a co-op that is inviting to all and where people are owners for the positive benefits of cooperation not because they feel extorted by the surcharge.
This decision was not made lightly and we hope that you will support it. A survey of cashiers, past and present, asking them what they didn't like about their job would elicit responses that would most certainly include something like, "People getting upset about the surcharge>" People have gotten angry, left without their groceries or begrudgingly bought them only to never come back and have bad stories about "that place on Guadalupe that charges a weird tax on groceries unless you're part of their club."

I know that this may upste some of you and I encourage you to e-mail or call me to talk about it. But, overall, I think that this is an EXTREMELY positive development for Wheatsville and for our future.

One really cool change from our new system that will benfit you is that if you're an owner you will automatically get our owner specials savings each time you shop without having to remember the coupon or anything! And, at the bottom of your receipt, you can see the amount you saved on deals at your co-op!

We've also heard from owners that sometimes they talk to people who think that you have to be a member to shop here or that we're too expensive because of the surcharge or whatever. Now, you can promote Wheatsville vigorously to friends and not get stung with negative surcharge stories!

We'll have a much more in depth story about this in the July Breeze, but I wanted to make sure that I started to get the word out about this change as quickly as we could once I discovered our error. Thanks so much for your understanding and your support of Wheatsville!!!

This week in the deli try some of our freshly made case salads. 

We have fresh sliced Boarshead Honey Maple Ham and imported Swiss cheese on special.

On a budget? Don't forget that we always have our delicious, healthy and filling, all organic small Beans and Rice for only $1.99 and our giant Whole Veggie sandwiches for $3.29! We think that this might be the best sandwich deal in town.

Ask any of your friendly deli staffers for suggestions on any of your delicious selections.

Don’t forget there are Owner’s Specials on any of our espresso drinks.  25 cents off an organic espresso beverage is quite the treat.  My current favorite is an iced latte with a shot of organic vanilla syrup! Yum.

I have a secret that I am going to share with you. I love ∫, especially the local  variety.  So yesterday, while I was cutting the cheese (snicker) I thought to myself, “what can I do to take grilled peaches over the  top?” . “Brie!” is what I answered myself with. So, I dropped what I was doing and ran to the produce department and grabbed a few very ripe local peaches. Ran back to the deli fired up the char grill, sliced up the peaches and threw them on the grill. Now, peaches do not take that long to grill. If you leave them on to long they turn to mush. So 1-3 minutes, depending on the heat of the fire. Once they are off the grill top with brie. I used St. Andre’s, but any brie would work.  “Absolutely sinful!”

We're reallye excited to be making our own fresh sausage from scratch.  Right now we’re producing both sweet Italian and hot Italian sausage.  Both are great on the grill and fantastic in any pasta dish or pizza topping.  You can also try our Chorizo, a Mexican style sausage used in breakfast dishes or by its self.  All of our fresh-made sausages are made with Niman Ranch beef and pork, natural gut casings and natural spices.  These sausages are $7.99 per pound and are an inexpensive dinner option with lots of flavor.  You’d also be supporting certified, humane treatment of animals in the process! SO far these sausages are cooking up some real interest from our meat fans, so check it out!

Remember to tell your early bird friends that we will begin having earlier hours on Monday June 15th! We'll be open from 7:30am to 11pm! Woo hoo! People have long been demanding that we wake up a little earlier so they could fit even more Wheatsville quality time into their life and so we are! Free small drip coffee from 7:30-8am from June 15th through the 22nd!!!

Memorial Day BBQ action and renovation news!

Hi folks!

I hope that you have fun weekend plans.

Wheatsville is here for all your entry into summer needs and we're open all day on Monday, our normal hours, so come on in!

Some news you can use!
We'll be adding two new registers beginning at the middle of next week to help make the end of your shopping experience go even more quickly and smoothly than it does now. Also, just so you know, we are installing a new register system next week. We're hoping that this is largely unnoticeable to you, but you may notice that our cashiers are a little less nimble than normal as they get used to the new system. We are adding additional cashier support during next week in order to help keep the lines moving quickly.

One big change that comes from this change, starting on June 1st is that you will no longer need to bring up the paper Member coupons to get those deals. We are replacing our member coupon program with an Owner's saving program. Your savings on these specials will automatically be deducted at the register. Yay! Less paper waste and easier for you to always get your owner special deals that are a benefit of Wheatsville membership!

Early is the new late
Remember all of you awesome early birds,  we are going to be opening at 7:30 am beginning Monday June 15th! Come in between 7:30 and 8am between June 15th and June 22nd and get a free drip coffee with any purchase!

Renovation news!
We continue to move into our new space. Our awesome new awning has been up for a week providing lovely shade. Our eat-in counter in the front windows give you even more eating and seating options. Coming next week, more new and better picnic tables for the front!

Our produce and grocery departments have moved into their new digs, at least somewhat. Please bear with us as we complete these transitions over the coming weeks.

Car Parking continues to be difficult and we will be heading into some additional parking changes in the coming weeks. For now, our main parking in the middle is still available. If possible, shifting your shopping earlier in the morning or later at night will make your parking experience a WHOLE LOT Better. Stay tuned for more information about changes to the parking situation and thank you so much for your patience! I know that it has really stunk at times! When we're done, we'll have more than double the parking we've had during the project!

Tour the store and get stocked up for BBQ Time!
Hey folks it's grilling time! It's time to round up your friends and head to the lake, favorite city park, or just set up your backyard and BBQ! A quick pass through Wheatsville will quickly fill up your basket with all your necessities. You can load up on fresh "corn in husk" (a must for easy BBQ veggies) in our new produce department.

There, you'll also find easy to make, grill-ready portabella mushrooms and lots of fresh squash, zucchini and eggplant. Onward through the growing grocery isles (they seem to be replicating themselves), where you can pick up chips, charcoal, sauce, drinks and buns, along with other assorted snacks and BBQ staples. Don't forget to hit up the bodycare department for some sun screen and bug spray. Go into the bulk area and pick up some great snackable and healthy treats for the kids. With a great selection of trail mixes and granolas to choose from, what's not to like? Or, if you have a sweet tooth, great natural candy with definitely be a hit. Swing by the frozen section and get some great CAP deals on small pints (a new favorite of mine: blood orange Ciao Bella sorbet). Oops…I might should have kept that to myself.
 
Onward thru the fog and you'll get to the meat department: the Mecca of all things grill-able. We have grill-ready wild caught sockeye salmon and Niman Ranch sweet Italian sausage and bratwurst. All are on member coupon this month for 75 cents off the total price. We also have lots of fresh cuts just begging for the grill every day, from thick pork chops to big ole fat Rib eyes, as well as plenty of fresh daily-ground chuck and pork. We also have some great, sustainable choices for grilling seafood. A quick and sure-to-please choice is the Sablefish. With just a quick toss with your favorite blend of spices, sablefish makes a great option to your plate. And please don't waste time with pre-made spice blends when you can pick up only what you need for the day at our herb counter. The herb counter is filled with great natural spices and organic spices.
 
Wait! There's still more! The deli has loads and loads of fresh salads that will please everyone at your BBQ, no matter what their diet preferences are. They also have awesome new fresh-baked breads that will surely get devoured just as soon as you bust out a great cheese you picked up. The cheese department has an awesome selection of domestic cheeses available, including fine blue cheese and a fantastic brie selection.

With all that bread and cheese, you must grab some beer or wine to complement your selection. Remember that most time a good dry spicy red wine works with the whole BBQ concept, and just one bottle could change the BBQ from being standard to extraordinary.

Beer! Please don't forget the beer especially if you're a guest. Never show up empty handed. Wheatsville has several "fancy" canned beers now. If you're tired of Bud Light and Coors Light, you should try the "Little Yella Pils", "Dale's Pale Ale", "Steam Engine", or "Third Eye" all great, refreshing beers.

Come by the Deli this weekend and pick up a whole roasted chicken. They are all natural and we roast them in house.  We also take the extra time to brine them which makes them extra delicious.  So, swing by the deli pick up of great sides, dinner rolls, and wine in order to make a quick dinner for yourself.
 
Cool yourself down with a fresh smoothie – ours are made with lots of frozen fruit, fresh juices, and NO ICE!  Pick your flavor or try the special smoothie of the month, PB & J smoothie.  This smoothie of the month has been a great hit with our customers. It tastes like the last day of school feels, delicious and fun!

Bike to Work, lots of seasonal delights, grow your own food and so much more!

Yep, we continue to morph into the new Wheatsville. Over the next few days, we will be moving into our new grocery shelving. You won't see a ton of new products yet, but rest assured that we are taking your wish lists VERY seriously.

Bike to work day is tomorrow! Friday from 7am-9am, bike up to Wheatsville for some light breakfast noshing and some coffee!

Things are heating up outside, and the Wheatsville Deli is here to help you keep your cool!
Our spicy, delicious and charmingly cold tomato Gazpacho Soup is back in the full-serve case for your summertime delight!
Red Curry Tofu, a customer favorite for sure, is also in the case, combining spicy, roasted chunks of tofu with a cool and creamy Veganaise based dressing, full of raw veggies. Try a sample!
All your favorite hot-weather coolers are in stock as Grab-n-Go as well, including our fabulous pecan- and apple-studded Chicken Salad, creamy, buttermilk Pimento Cheese, Tuna Salad chockfull of crunchy and sweet veggies, and the vegan, tofu-based Eggless Egg Salad!

Mark Keul, with Brazos Valley Cheese Company, just delivered two wheels of his wonderful brie and a wheel of his Roquefert style blue. I will be cutting the brie as soon as i finish typing this e-mail. Just a heads up , this cheese department will be making its final move in the coming weeks. Keep a look out for cheesie specials and new cheeses. We will occupy the place where bulk is now and they will become neighbors with the produce department.
Here is a great cook out idea. I love grilling corn!! I love it eating it plain straight off the grill. but when plain just will not do I like coating the corn with a generous amount of butter and sprinkling freshly grated parmesean cheese. DE-LIC-IOUS!!!

With the start of a new month comes a new Rush Hour Recipe! Yay!  This month features Chicken With Chimichurri Sauce.
Every month we'll feature a new entree recipe (featuring a mix of vegetarian, non-vegetarian and vegan options) at the Deli Counter and on our website. We will keep an archive of recipe cards at the member center as well, so that you can pick one up and use it for your dinner shopping. You can even use these recipes to build your own recipe book. These recipes come from various co-ops all over the States, which is pretty cool. Plus they have been kitchen tested so you trust them to turn out right.
